How many times this year were the Lions criticized for squandering leads and playing it safe instead of playing to win?
Going conservative in their play calling, not taking risks, being totally predictable. That mind set and lack of execution lost the Lions a number of games in the 4th quarter and ultimately cost Schwartz his job.
I get the feeling the Lions are conducting their search for a new head coach the same way they've tried to close out games this season. Be predictable, don't take risks, play it safe instead of playing to win. I don't see much evidence of them being innovative or thinking outside the box in this search.
We keep hearing how desirable this position is, in fact its been labelled the "best" HC position available because the team is "ready to win." So be conservative, do what people expect you to do, don't rock the boat. After all you're clearly in the lead and what could possibly go wrong?
Personally I'd rather see them take a risk on someone who has the potential to be the next Harbaugh or Kelly than I would having them concentrate on recycled head coaches with uninspiring or losing records just because its the "safe" thing to do.
