Despite my frequent visits to this site to see if there is any other news on a new head coach, I'm writing on the defense of Matthew Stafford.
I swear I have never seen so many people complain about side arm passes in my life. For years and years we've had a long slew of back up quarterbacks awarded big contracts because they stepped up and had a few good games (Scott Mitchell, Charlie Batch etc). 1st round draft busts like Joey Harrington and Andre Ware; and a few wash-outs that should have stayed retired (Dante' Cullpepper).
Stafford is a guy who is trying to win football games; and at times (like Brett Favre) tries to make things happen that wouldn't be considered smart. In 5 years he hasn't once sat in front of the camera and acted like a primadona and the moment that he was asked about a coach to assist his mechanics, he gets scrutinized as an arrogant ass because he said it wasn't his style. What was he supposed to say? "Oh yeah, that would be great!" No player will ever admit in that he needs help with his mechanics, technique etc.
I also hear a bunch of people on the radio suggesting we trade him for picks. What?? and who do you want to use those "Picks" on? Johnny Football? Yes, please set my franchise back another 10 years because my current Franchise QB has made bad decisions with the football (for half of the season), has bad foot work and throws side arm passes.
The issue was the coach. If you want to bring up the pampering issue that LoJack eluded to then fine... who allowed it? Football players need discipline from the beginning to the end of their career and if the coaches will never tell Stafford he is doing anything wrong than what changes will he make? He certainly isn't going to come on to POD and listen to advice from fans. Stafford needs discipline, and weapons. The two games we Calvin was injured was evident that we had nobody who could step up.
This guy is our franchise QB and we have him for at least 2 more years. Support him and the Lions that you are a fan of, and that they will make the right decision with him and the players surrounding him and get off his ass.
