The average NFL career

while a little off topic when the Lions have been doing so well. I was thinking about the average NFL career and what that means and how they get to it. We know NFL careers are short, but then in my mind it seems year after year we see the same players out there taking the field, we don't realize the roster turnover. For example, I enjoy the plays Ed Reed has made this year.... oh wait...

so who and how are these averages tabulated?

3.5 years is the number I often heard thrown around yet there's guys like Matt Willis who were still trying to make the Lions more than a few seasons after college wrapped up. How many guys keep working at it and at what age do they stop chasing that dream?

Who was the NFL's oldest rookie, and not by way of having been a pro baseball player and then returning for NCAA football, but a guy who used his eligibilty in football and then toiled for years not on a roster... was it that guy that played special teams for the Eagles?

if the averge is 3.5 years yet there's so many recognizable names that seem to play much longer, is this average being brought down by all the one year guys? all the two week guys?

anyways, I know there's many here much smarter than I and this is a numbers thing which is another weakness of mine (with chocolate) but what are some of your random thoughts / questions about the "average NFL career"?
