I have an alternative plan for rebuilding the Lions this offseason. Just about everyone who talks about the draft wants their team to trade down. GM's want this too. With this, I think that it is now easier to trade up in a draft. With this in mind, I have a couple draft scenarios.
Last year, the Lions lost just about every game the same way. The offense killed the team with turnovers and blunders. I can remember only one game that I would blame on the defense, the snow game in Philly. Our defense was great in the red zone, tough against he run, and pretty good against the pass except for the big play. Gave up too many. In quite a few of these instances, Delmas got beat. He is now gone. In free agency, we add a stud safety, Ward or Byrd, to replace Louis. We basically keep the defense intact, replacing maybe wending, one corner, one LB, and a DE. We do this with veterans like we did last year with Mcintosh, Idonije, and Fluellen. We have the cap space to do this, plenty now.
So now the draft. We lost for 2 reasons. Fumbles and interceptions. Fumbles just has to be fixed by players. Interceptions were caused. By 2 things. Stafford being off, and receivers not getting open or tipping balls. The 2nd item is the real problem, our receiving corp after Calvin is awful. Not 1 guy should start in the NFL. Not Burleson, which Lions agree, not Broyles , or Durham, or Ross. 2 scenarios.
First , we trade up in round 1, take Watkins, will cost us our second. This is doable, many teams like Oakland will make that trade. Then in the 3rd, we take another bigger receiver like Matthews, Moncreif, or Adams. We would addv2 starters this way.
2nd option. We pick Evans at 10, then trade back into the late first to pick either Lee or Beckham. I feel there are 5 elite receivers in this draft, Watkins, Lee, Evan, Beckham, and Benjamin. Let's get 2 of them, then we have 3 star receivers for the next 5 yrs, first rounders are controlled for 5 seasons. You could not cover all of these guys successfully, offense would be great, defense has stars who are young, and we scare everyone. This is a team that I would pay to see.
Please comment or offer alternatives, but I feel the weak link could be fixed and made into the NFL's best in 1 day. Agree?
