2014 NFL mock draft: Three-round mock for Lions

Thomas Campbell-US PRESSWIRE

What might the Detroit Lions' first three picks look like in the 2014 NFL Draft? Let's examine a three-round mock draft.

After going two rounds last week, SB Nation released a three-round 2014 NFL mock draft this week. Much like last week's mock, the Detroit Lions' first two picks involve a wide receiver and a cornerback, although the two positions are in a different order this time around. Also, the Lions' third-round pick involves an offensive lineman.

In the first round, the Lions' projected pick is Texas A&M wide receiver Mike Evans. With Sammy Watkins going fifth in this mock, Evans seems to make the most sense for the Lions if they still want to fill their need at wide receiver. The 6'5 Evans had 69 catches for 1,394 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2013, and pairing him with Calvin Johnson would be quite nice for Matthew Stafford.

The Lions' second-round pick is Virginia Tech cornerback Kyle Fuller. The Lions selected cornerback Darius Slay in the second round last year, and they drafted cornerbacks Bill Bentley, Chris Greenwood and Jonte Green in 2012. There's a definite need for a talent upgrade at the position, and I suppose throwing Fuller into the mix could help down the road. Then again, if the Lions don't add anybody in free agency, their best bet may simply be to hope that Chris Houston bounces back from a rough year and one of their young guys makes a big jump this offseason.

Moving on to the third round, the Lions are projected to take Arkansas center Travis Swanson with the 76th overall pick. The Lions got right guard Larry Warford in the third round last year, and he was one of the top rookies in all of the NFL. They may not have an immediate need at center if Dominic Raiola is re-signed this offseason, but it would be a wise idea to start building toward the future at that position.

What's your preferred combination of positions for the Lions' top three picks? In no particular order, I'd probably go wide receiver, outside linebacker and center right now.
