Lions expected to hire Jim Bob Cooter as quarterbacks coach

USA TODAY Sports

The Detroit Lions are reportedly going to hire Denver Broncos assistant Jim Bob Cooter as their new quarterbacks coach.

On Friday, Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi indicated that the team was still planning to hire a dedicated quarterbacks coach. That position appears to be the last major vacancy on the coaching staff, but it may not be open for long, because Bruce Feldman reports that the Lions are on the verge of hiring Denver Broncos assistant Jim Bob Cooter to be their new quarterbacks coach.

Cooter, who played quarterback in college at Tennessee, was mentioned earlier this week as a potential addition to the Lions coaching staff. He served as an offensive assistant with the Broncos in 2013, and he was also an offensive assistant from 2009-11 on Jim Caldwell's Indianapolis Colts coaching staff. In 2012, Cooter was an offensive quality control coach for the Kansas City Chiefs.

If the Lions do in fact hire Cooter, I'd have to imagine that they would finally be able to finalize their coaching staff. As mentioned, quarterbacks coach is the last notable vacancy on the coaching staff. The Lions could always create other positions to fill, but at this point the coaching staff seems to be on the verge of being finalized.
