I cannot believe so many people are against this. Year after year we get SOLF: Same Old Lions Fans. Always wanting to trade down, and draft defense, defense, defense. We don't need a corner that early; we already have young deleloping talent on the roster. What I want, is for the Lions to be proactive, to plan ahead. Not only do I think it should be done, but I think it is incredibly important that it get done.
Calvin Johnson is by far and away the best Wr in the league. He's also the most targeted, most beat up, most willing to go over the middle and absorb the big hit wr in the league. He also has a bad knee. And most importantly, HE'S 28 YEARS OLD. Its a well known fact that players tend to not be the same once they hit 30. Even the seemingly invinsible start to slow down at some point. Need proof? Two players come to mind: Andre Johnson, and Roddy White. Up until 2011, those two men were above Calvin Johnson on everyones lists of best wr in the nfl. What happened? Well, Calvin became an absolute monster, and they both turned 30.
My point is if you draft Sammy Watkins, not only could you potentially have the games next great wr in the same team as todays. But youll also be easing up the pressure on Calvin. And when Calvin starts to slow down, you can lean on your two younger guys in Watkins and Tate (who is only 25). It's common misconception that we need to add toys to help Stafford. We need to add peices to protect Calvin, and ensure that he has the long and prolific career that he's on pace for.
We take Calvin for granted. His nickname may be Megatron, but at the end of the day, he is human.
