There seems to be two camps here on POD in regards to Mike Evans. Some think he is the next Alshon Jeffrey/Vincent Jackson (those seem to be to most popular comparisons) while others think he may struggle to get separation at the next level, which will limit his impact. This has been a hot topic here on POD, so I thought I would add some facts to the debate. As you can see from the title, I fall into the second category - I am not a fan of Mike Evans, but let me explain why.
This article on muscle fibers does a great job explaining slow twitch v. fast twitch muscle fibers. Basically an athlete that has great burst, explosiveness, acceleration will have very fast twitch muscle fibers. When Mike Evans ran his 4.53 forty, the people who like him got the confirmation they needed that he has enough speed to be a weapon in the nfl. While his forty time was very good for a man his size, it only measures straight line speed. Receivers need great agility in order to run great routes (getting in and out of their breaks, changing directions, and accelerating) and gain separation from defenders. The drill that measures agility is the 3 cone drill, and it is his time in this drill that has me worried.
He ran a 7.08 in that drill. For comparisons, Alshon Jeffery ran a 6.71 and Vincent Jackson ran a 6.84. The 3 cone drill only covers 30 yards, so to have a nearly 4 tenths (.37 to be exact) of a second time difference is quite worrisome. Jeffrey would beat Evans by 5 or 6 yards if they overlapped the images of them doing the drill at the same time. Dri Archer ran a combine best 4.26 forty, and a 6.86 3 cone drill, for another comparison/perspective.
I think it is obvious that Jeffrey is a more fast twitch athlete and that Evans is a slow twitch athlete. I think Evans will have trouble gaining separation from nfl defensive backs because of this. He could still be a quality receiver, as he does have: good straight line speed, big body, can high point the ball, and a great catch radius. I just don't think he should be our pick at 10 because he lacks the agility needed to be an elite receiver in the NFL.
This is my first fan post, so be nice to me, but let me know what you think. Did I change anyone's mind on Evans?
