I thought it would be interesting to evaluate our current roster in a new way. Let's use a Bowling Average and a Bowling Score to see how we think Lions players did last year compared to their expectations.
First pick a player, attach an Average to him. For example, I thought Willie Young would have a decent year, around or slightly above half of the DE's in the league. I was hoping for a 165 average. I think he did have a decent year, except for many untimely penalties, which caused his actual score to be a bit lower. I think Willie Young "bowled" a Score of 150. Although this is based solely on opinion, it quickly quantifies my opinion of Willie Young and makes it easy to compare to other Averages and Scores.
Obviously a 300 average would be impossible, but someone like Calvin Johnson could easily have an upper 200's and it is possible for a player to score a 300. If Peyton Manning would have kicked ass in the Super Bowl and won, I would have scored him very close to a perfect game.
We can use this to see what PODers expect of a player and if that player exceeded or came short of those expectations.
