2014 NFL mock draft: New Lions picks from Mel Kiper, Todd McShay

Spruce Derden-USA TODAY Sports

Mel Kiper and Todd McShay both have the Detroit Lions going offense in the first round of their new 2014 NFL mock drafts.

We're just a little more than a week away from the 2014 NFL Draft. It feels like we still have months to go with how long the pre-draft process has taken, but the first round is just nine days away.

With the first round nearing, ESPN's Mel Kiper and Todd McShay have each released a new 2014 NFL mock draft. Interestingly enough, neither Kiper nor McShay has the Detroit Lions going with a defensive back in the first round. Instead, they both gave the Lions a pass-catcher with the 10th overall pick.

In Kiper's mock draft, the Lions are projected to take LSU wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. With all of the Lions' top potential targets off the board in the first nine picks, including Mike Evans, Kiper thinks Beckham Jr. is a good fit for Detroit. Yes, he'd be the No. 3 wide receiver in this year's draft class, but I actually like this pick quite a bit. Rather than reach for a cornerback or a safety, adding a player like Beckham Jr., who has lots of potential, would take care of a big need on offense.

McShay has the Lions passing on secondary help for North Carolina tight end Eric Ebron. Ebron actually seems like a more legitimate contender for the 10th overall pick since he's the draft's top tight end, and he would also fill a need on offense. The Lions aren't exactly hurting for depth at tight end, but as McShay said, Ebron would basically "become another receiver in their offense in most formations."

If the choice came down to these two players, would you rather see the Lions take Beckham Jr. or Ebron with the 10th overall pick?
