2014 NFL Draft results: Lions pick Nevin Lawson

Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

The Detroit Lions have selected Nevin Lawson with the 133rd overall pick of the 2014 NFL Draft.

With their fourth pick in the 2014 NFL Draft and the 133rd overall selection, the Detroit Lions have selected Utah State cornerback Nevin Lawson. This was the Lions' first pick on the third day of the draft, and it was a compensatory selection.

Lawson is the first defensive back drafted by the Lions this year. There was some thinking that they might address their need at cornerback a bit earlier, but they decided to wait until the fourth round. Interestingly enough, Lawson is only 5'9, which goes against the idea that the Lions wanted to get bigger at the position. He did run a 4.48 40-yard dash at the combine, though, so he does have good speed.

At Utah State, Lawson had 57 total tackles, 5.0 tackles for loss and 4 interceptions in 2013. He also had 14 passes defended and 1 forced fumble. Over the course of his entire career, he had 6 interceptions and broke up 37 passes.

The Lions already have several young guys at cornerback, and Lawson is merely the latest one to join the team. Based on his size, he seemingly projects as a nickel type of corner, but it remains to be seen how exactly the Lions plan to use him.
