2014 NFL Draft results: Lions pick TJ Jones

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sport

The Detroit Lions have selected TJ Jones with the 189th overall pick of the 2014 NFL Draft.

With their seventh pick in the 2014 NFL Draft and the 189th overall selection, the Detroit Lions have selected Notre Dame wide receiver TJ Jones. This means that for the second year in a row, the Lions have taken a player from Notre Dame in the sixth round. (Last year, they drafted Notre Dame running back Theo Riddick in the sixth round.)

Jones is the first true wide receiver to join the Lions' draft class this year. Eric Ebron, the Lions' first-round pick, will certainly get a lot of playing time out wide and in the slot, but he's technically a tight end.

At Notre Dame, Jones had 70 catches for 1,108 yards and 9 touchdowns in 2013. For his entire career, Jones caught 181 passes for 2,429 yards and 19 touchdowns. Also, he ran the ball 10 times for 75 yards and 2 touchdowns.

With the Lions, Jones figures to be a slot receiver. At least early in his career, he will likely mainly be a contributor on special teams, but with the uncertainty surrounding Ryan Broyles' health, it doesn't hurt to have some extra depth at wide receiver. The Lions also drafted a wide receiver in the sixth round last year in Corey Fuller, and he will compete with Jones and many others to make the 53-man roster this summer.
