A lot of us on this site are calling for a trade down and for the Lions to pick up extra picks. There is a lot of agreement on the fact that at pick 10, need and value don't really pair up very well, unless of course Evans falls to 10. This is looking less likely every day. So, the farther you trade back, the more extra and better picks you should be able to get in return, although this is not always exactly true. But it should be close, so I have looked at trading back for Detroit.
There are 7 elite players in the draft according to most people. Wrs Watkins and Evans, defensive players Mack and Clowney, and 3 offensive tackles Robinson, Matthews, and Lewan. It is possible that one of the tackles could still be there at 10, but that is not a real need for us and could be the bargaining chip we need. So if you assume 2 QBs in the top 10, and I think that will be the case, plus 7 guys, you can see that we missed out by 1 spot. So who is actually next?
We have had a lot of debate on here about that, but just about anyone you put there seems to be a reach, at least a little. I think that there are quite a few fairly evenly rated guys in the next group, all of whom could help us and we could get extra players in this deep draft. This draft has a lot of talent thru at least 4 rounds, so we would like more chances in those rounds. The player I see as possibles for Detroit include DT Donald, TE Ebron, Wrs Beckham, Cooks, and Lee, OT Martin, who could play center,OLBs Barr and Shazier, CBs Gilbert, Dennard, and Fuller, and safeties Pryor and Dix. That is 13 more players in the next tier. Now all of us don't like 1 or 2 of these guys as much as the rest, all are good players who would fit in some way our team.
If you do the math, 7 studs plus 13 possible studs, plus 2 Qbs means that we should not trade back farther than 22, which is Philadelphia. Green Bay is 21, and I would like to pick in front of them if possible, because they are either picking a safety or Shazier, both of which could be who the Lions would like the most there. So unless Philly offers a lot, and they want Beckham, we should not go lower than 20 or we will not add one of Mayhews stated second tier guys.
There are plenty of good players after the ones I have listed, but I do think that this is the drop off point. Thought about Mosely and Roby, but they don't belong in this group in my opinion. I wonder if you guys agree with my logic?
