2014 NFL Draft results: Lions pick Eric Ebron

Bob Donnan-USA TODAY Sports

The Detroit Lions have selected Eric Ebron with the 10th overall pick of the 2014 NFL Draft.

With their first pick in the 2014 NFL Draft and the 10th overall selection, the Detroit Lions have selected North Carolina tight end Eric Ebron. He is the first tight end to be taken in this year's draft.

Early on in the first round, it looked like things were falling into place for a possible trade up for the Lions. Sammy Watkins fell to the fourth overall pick and Khalil Mack was there at No. 5, but Watkins ended up in Buffalo thanks to a trade and Mack was drafted by the Oakland Raiders. After this, with Jake Matthews, Mike Evans, Justin Gilbert and Anthony Barr being taken, the Lions were forced to look elsewhere.

In the end, the Lions looked in the direction of a tight end. By adding Ebron, the Lions still managed to add a pass catcher for Matthew Stafford, and they can now throw Ebron into the mix at tight end along with Brandon Pettigrew and Joseph Fauria. If nothing else, Ebron is another weapon in the passing game for offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi, who came from a New Orleans Saints team with one heck of a tight end in Jimmy Graham.

In college, Ebron caught 112 passes in his career and had 1,805 yards and 8 touchdowns. Last season, he found the end zone 3 times and had 973 yards on 62 catches.
