A Rare Lions Champion has Passed

I just had a client in my office, and I of course was talking to him about the Lions draft last night, and he asked me if I knew Kenny Russell. Kenny was a good friend of his in Toledo and had just passed away. I said , Im sorry, but I don't think I knew him. He told me he was a lineman on the 1957 Detroit Lions championship team, wore his championship ring proudly most of the time, and stayed a Lions fan his whole life. He played both ways on the line back then.

I looked him up after my patient left. He was a 6th round draft pick in 1957, 71st overall pick, so he was a rookie on the championship team. He was listed as an offensive tackle, but was a backup on both sides of the ball, Played in Detroit for 3 seasons, then retired. I was told that he got paid $4,600 a season. He played college ball at Bowling Green, and it looks like he played on special teams too as his only stat is one kickoff return for zero yds!

Most Lions players from our last championship must be in their 80's by now, I wonder how many are still with us. Maybe the Lions should get them all together at a halftime sometime soon. I would think they might deserve a little recognition. I would certainly be standing up and cheering them!
