In Monday’s notes, we noted that CBS is reporting Matthew Stafford is seeking $25 million per year when he signs a new contract. With most people expecting the Detroit Lions to start negotiations in the upcoming offseason, we may see that payday come to fruition sooner rather than later.
Monday there was a ton of discussion on Stafford contract, but I would love to see the poll results of the question for all Lions fans:
Would you be okay with the Detroit Lions paying Matthew Stafford an average of $25 million per year in his next contract?
My answer: Yes, no question. Earlier in the year, after Andrew Luck signed his mega-contract, I estimated Stafford’s contract to look something like a six-year deal for $130 million, or around $21.7 million per year. However, Stafford has since proven that the last eight games of last season were no fluke, and he’s off to a brilliant start in 2016. At this point, my prediction is likely the lowest total we could expect for Stafford.
While you never want to hand a player a blank checkbook, you almost have to with Stafford. He is quite clearly the quarterback of this team’s future for the next 5-10 years and you just don’t let go of that. Every year, franchise quarterbacks set records in the deals they sign, and next year likely won’t be different. Stafford will get paid and he absolutely should.
Your turn.
