Tuesday Notes: Stanton Probably Won't Ever Start This Season

  • Drew Stanton isn't going to start at quarterback this season barring an injury to Dan Orlovsky or something drastically changing talent-wise.  Rod Marinelli is not going to start Stanton simply to evaluate him for the future, which is just dumb in my opinion.  Getting him some playing time is good for the future, yet Marinelli doesn't seem like he is going to change his mind on this topic.
  • Here's your weekly injury update from Marinelli:
“Just a quick update on the injuries. Jordon (Dizon) is still nursing a hamstring. Felton has a high ankle sprain so we’re still looking at that right now and he could miss this week and maybe one more but that’s—we’ll find out a little bit more Wednesday. Casey (FitzSimmons) had some ribs; I think he’ll be okay. And Dwight Smith with the foot, (it’s) still somewhat questionable and we’ll find out during the week.”
Marinelli also mentioned that Damion Cook may be able to play on Sunday against the Bears.
  • There were tons of Redskins fans at the game on Sunday, helping make up for some of the empty seats.  I emphasize the word "some" since there were still lots of empty seats.
  • Apparently Peter King guaranteed the Lions won't go 0-16.
  • I agree with the FanHouse's Ryan Wilson, the Lions signing Mike Vick when he gets out of prison would be the worst idea ever.  If he were on the team I would refuse to root for them.
  • Some people should just not be on TV.
  • Many NFL players reportedly tested positive for water pills, which may result in suspensions since they are illegal.  Water pills can apparently mask a positive steroid test, though most the players involved in this situation seem to have used water pills for weight loss reasons.

Thursday Notes: Kitna Gets an MRI, Misses Practice

  • Jon Kitna had an MRI on Wednesday and is questionable for Sunday's game against the Vikings.  He missed practice due to his back injury and may not be healthy enough to play this weekend.  Dan Orlovsky and Drew Stanton split the reps in practice to fill in for Kitna.  Orlovsky is still suffering from the effects of a couple different injuries, but in all likelihood he will be ready for Sunday.
  • No, Roy Williams, the Lions will not go 12-4, 11-5, or 10-6.  In fact, they will be lucky to win more than a few games, so I would just worry about that right now.
  • The Panthers signed fifth-round draft pick and wide receiver Kenneth Moore from the Lions practice squad.
  • Shaun Cody, Travis Fisher, Jon Kitna, Edwin Mulitalo, Casey FitzSimmons, Dan Orlovsky, Stephen Peterman, and Roy Williams are all on the Lions' initial injury report for this week.
  • Erin Henderson, Bernard Berrian, Vinny Ciurciu, Ray Edwards, Jim Kleinsasser, Sidney Rice, Benny Sapp, John Sullivan, and Madieu Williams are on Minnesota's injury report right now.
  • Contrary to a report in the Dayton Daily News, the 49ers do not have interest in trading for Roy Williams.
  • It has only been four games, but Leigh Bodden definitely has not lived up to the hype.  Even worse, the Lions gave him a big contract in the offseason before he did anything on the field for them.
  • Mike Furrey doesn't understand what keeps going wrong for the Lions on game day.
  • Steve Mariucci thinks the Lions can win if they bring in the right personnel.  He's correct in a "Captain Obvious" sort of way, but he does raise a good point that the Lions need someone that can bring in the right personnel.  Matt Millen didn't bring in any of the right players or coaches, and even Rod Marinelli has brought in players that don't seem to be all that good.

If Detroit can hire a GM that in turn hires the right coach and signs and drafts the right players, then yes, the Lions can become winners.  However, it would take an awful lot for all of those things to go correctly, and based on the past, it seems unlikely that Detroit will become a winner anytime soon.
  • The Red Wings begin their season tonight and will raise a banner honoring last season's Stanley Cup-winning team before the game.  For more on the Red Wings, check out Winging It In Motown.
  • No thanks to the Lions, the Sporting News ranked Detroit as the second best sports city behind Boston.

Tuesday Notes: Roy Williams Wants the Ball

  • Roy Williams isn't exactly happy with how he's being used and he voiced his frustrations to the media.
"I really think I'm a role player right now," Williams said, adding that he doesn't even have himself on his fantasy football team. "I got Calvin (Johnson)."

"I'm a little ticked off because I feel if I'm not involved in the game and we lose, I'm ticked off. If I'm not involved and we win, hey, it's a great job. I feel I can make some plays."

Three catches a game, he said, "that's not going to cut it."

Williams tried to make it sound like he's only angry because he wasn't involved and the Lions lost, saying that if they would have won he wouldn't have any problems.  Honestly, though, I don't buy that for a second.  Roy Williams is in a contract year, so it's understandable that he would want the ball.  After all, his future contract depends on his performance this year if he becomes a free agent.

Regardless of that, though, I don't really like to hear Roy complain at all as he dropped one of the passes that was thrown in his direction.  To be fair, Calvin Johnson had a drop as well, but it still makes you look bad when you're voicing your problems about not getting the ball after dropping one that was thrown to you.
  • I normally can't stand ESPN's Stephen A. Smith, but for once I actually agree with him on something.  Smith went on First Take on Monday and absolutely tore apart Matt Millen.  The Free Press has the text of what he said, and it all is very true.
  • Unsurprisingly, Rod Marinelli is firmly behind Jon Kitna.  It doesn't look like any changes will happen in the near future unless Kitna completely collapses against the 49ers.  And even if he does collapse, Drew Stanton isn't supposed to be 100% healthy until the start of October, so it's unlikely he could get ready in time to play against Chicago on October 5.
  • Speaking of Stanton, he was wearing an interesting shirt yesterday.
As he was walking out of the locker room Monday, Stanton was wearing a T-shirt that read "Born to Run Things."
Hopefully the shirt is true when Stanton does eventually take over as the starting QB.
  • Kitna is regretful about walking off the field following his third interception before the play was even over.
  • Tight end Casey FitzSimmons likely will play against San Francisco despite having a thumb injury.
  • Charles Woodson picked off two passes against the Lions on Sunday even though he had a broken toe.
  • Eagles receiver DeSean Jackson may have made one of the dumbest plays in NFL history last night.

Monday Notes: Packers Game Observations

  • Many fans are calling for the Lions to bench Jon Kitna, and although I really can't disagree that his three interceptions on three straight drives is uncalled for, do you really think Dan Orlovsky would be any better?  Once Drew Stanton is healthy again (supposedly at the start of October), I can understand benching Kitna for him if the season is already over, but for right now, at least, Kitna sadly is the Lions' best option at QB.
  • George Foster was benched and replaced with rookie Gosder Cherilus after one half of Sunday's game.  Foster gave up a couple sacks and Cherilus played very well considering that was his first real playing time in a regular season game.  If I'm remembering correctly Cherilus didn't give up a single sack, so that was great to see.
  • Although it was said last week that Jordon Dizon would play more, he actually never got into the game on defense.  He played on special teams, but that was it.
  • According to a reader that was at the game, a "Fire Millen" chant broke out after the Lions went down 24-9.  How long until we start to hear "Bench Kitna" during a home game?
  • This really was one of the worst performances I've ever seen by the secondary.  Even though there was talk about how bad they were last week against a rookie, they just looked flat out confused against Green Bay.  Cornerbacks were falling down, missing assignments, and simply letting Packers receivers run right by them.  It was really an ugly sight to see.
  • Safety Gerald Alexander sustained a concussion and tight end Casey FitzSimmons hurt one of his thumbs on Sunday.  Alexander was actually benched in favor of Daniel Bullocks before this game and FitzSimmons played well as he made a few nice catches.
  • I know they were playing from behind again, but the Lions only rushed for 49 yards yesterday.  They actually only ran the ball 12 times, and you can really take 1 attempt away since Jon Kitna took off and ran once.
  • The defensive line really disappointed me in this game.  They only had one sack, which came when Dewayne White forced a fumble, and Aaron Rodgers was able to escape pressure over and over again.  Sometimes he would not only avoid the sack, but proceed to complete a pass downfield.
  • Can the Lions defense make sure to play on every down from now on?  The Packers went 9-16 on third down conversions, whereas the Lions went a dismal 2-12.
  • Jason Hanson did all that was asked of him.  He nailed all three of his field goal attempts and didn't miss an extra point.
  • Both Calvin Johnson and Roy Williams dropped a pass when they were wide open.  Roy looked like he looking upfield before he actually made the catch and Calvin pretty much just dropped it.
  • I think we can forget about the drop Calvin made after the amazing game he ended up having.  His two fourth quarter touchdowns gave the Lions the lead for a short period of time and he really showed off his physical ability, especially his speed.  In the end, Johnson finished with 6 catches for 129 yards and 2 touchdowns.
  • Roy Williams added 3 catches of his own for 48 yards, but as we saw in the preseason, it looks like Calvin Johnson has become this team's top receiver.
  • Going back to Calvin for a second, the coaches did make a good adjustment with him in the passing game.  Johnson was struggling to get off the line of scrimmage at times, so the coaches started to run him across the middle.  That is how Johnson scored his two touchdowns, so I do give the coaches credit for making that change.
  • Daniel Bullocks led the team with 12 tackles.
  • Aaron Rodgers torched the Lions defense as he went 24-38 and threw for 328 yards and 3 touchdowns.
  • A couple fans said that they couldn't even give tickets away for yesterday's game.  If Detroit loses this week then there is no doubt the Chicago game on October 5 (their next home game) will be blacked out unless a company again steps in.  If they can't even sell out the home opener against the Packers by themselves then there is no way they will do so against the Bears, especially if they are 0-3 at the time.

Thursday Notes: Kitna Loses Cool Due to a Few Big Hits

  • After following their usual routine on Wednesday, the Lions will not have practice today as Rod Marinelli canceled the two originally scheduled sessions.  They will be back on the practice field tomorrow before traveling to Cincinnati on Saturday to get ready for their second preseason game on Sunday.
  • ESPN.com's Kevin Seifert visited the Lions on Wednesday to take in their two practices, and he shared some of his observations on his blog.
  • Seifert also posted the most detailed version of what caused Jon Kitna to lose his temper during yesterday's morning practice.  Basically, the practice had already been very fierce and the defense was not holding back at all.  Dwight Smith was talking smack to Casey FitzSimmons, Ernie Sims put a big hit on Mike Furrey, and Buster Davis laid out Dan Campbell right after a Kitna pass came in.  And then Davis did the same thing to John Owens, causing Kitna to lose it.
"Do something, Buster! Do something!" Kitna screamed, over and over, after the play. (We're guessing he meant, "Do something in this league before you start throwing players around in practice.") Getting angrier with each yell, Kitna started walking toward Davis before a few coaches got in his way. Fists never came close to flying, but rarely do you so much as see a quarterback advance in a threatening manner.
I can understand where Kitna is coming from as I doubt he likes to see his receivers getting hit so hard in practice, but he's got to understand where Buster Davis is coming from.  Davis is fighting for a spot on the roster with other linebackers, and he's got to show the coaches that he deserves to make the team.  Letting up and gently running into offensive players is not that way to do that, so what does Kitna expect?

After practice, Kitna spoke to the media and basically blamed the little temper tantrum on the entire team being a little cranky as they don't get to play their next preseason game until Sunday, which comes 10 days after their first one.
"I'm not going to get into specifics, that's how competitors are,'' Kitna said. "Today's really the last day and we're ready to start seeing other people on a weekly basis. You usually don't go more than seven days without a game in preseason and this is our seventh day -- and we've still got three more days until we play. The guys are just ready to hit somebody else.''
In the grand scheme of things this little conflict means nothing, but I do like the aggressiveness Buster Davis showed in practice.  He knows that he has to do everything possible to try and make the team, and if that means popping a couple of tight ends then so be it.
  • One final thing to mention from Kevin Seifert's account of what caused Kitna's outburst is that Roy Williams did not practice.  I have no idea why he didn't, but I'm sure we'll find out soon enough.
  • Madden NFL 09 came out earlier this week, and I'll post a review of it sometime soon.  Overall, the game seems pretty good, although the Lions do sort of suck.  Their offensive line and running game in Madden are sadly just about as bad as they are in real life.  Calvin Johnson and Roy Williams are dominant, but rarely did it seem like I had very much time to get the ball to them as the blitz gets to Kitna quickly.
  • Could Chad Johnson someday legally be known as Chad Ocho Cinco?  The answer to that question is yes, and no, I'm not joking.

Thursday Notes: It's Gameday!

  • The Lions once again were indoors on Wednesday and only practiced once in their final day of preparation before their game against the Giants.
  • Just a quick reminder: I'll be providing live updates of the game in the comments section of the game thread that will be posted later today.  Although the game starts at 7:00 p.m. ET, it will not be shown on TV until 9 p.m., so that's when the live updates will start.
  • The starters will only be in the game for about 10 plays, which is normal for the preseason opener.  Once Jon Kitna leaves the game, Dan Orlovsky will come in for a quarter and a half and then Drew Stanton will finish out the last quarter and a half according to Rod Marinelli.
  • As expected, Ernie Sims has been ruled out of today's game.
  • In a bit of a surprise, Buster Davis has been cleared to play.
  • With Mike Martz gone, Casey FitzSimmons is glad to be back at tight end.  FitzSimmons played fullback when Martz was the offensive coordinator.
  • J.T. O'Sullivan, a quarterback that spent last season with the Lions before following Mike Martz to San Francisco, is going to start for the 49ers in their preseason opener on Friday.
  • This isn't really relevant information at all, but the Lions are really ripping the media off.  I was browsing through their daily press release and found a couple of astounding bits of information regarding Internet use at Ford Field.

For a member of the media that wants to use wireless Internet, there is a $30 per game charge.  And for someone that wants to connect to the Internet via an Ethernet cord, get this, it'll cost them a whopping $300 a game.  300 freaking dollars.  Are the Lions really hurting for money that badly?  It's bad enough that those members of the media have to cover the Lions in the first place, but now they have to pay either $30 or $300 just to get on the Internet.  That's just wrong.
