Thursday Notes: Kitna Gets an MRI, Misses Practice
- Jon Kitna had an MRI on Wednesday and is questionable for Sunday's game against the Vikings. He missed practice due to his back injury and may not be healthy enough to play this weekend. Dan Orlovsky and Drew Stanton split the reps in practice to fill in for Kitna. Orlovsky is still suffering from the effects of a couple different injuries, but in all likelihood he will be ready for Sunday.
- No, Roy Williams, the Lions will not go 12-4, 11-5, or 10-6. In fact, they will be lucky to win more than a few games, so I would just worry about that right now.
- The Panthers signed fifth-round draft pick and wide receiver Kenneth Moore from the Lions practice squad.
- Shaun Cody, Travis Fisher, Jon Kitna, Edwin Mulitalo, Casey FitzSimmons, Dan Orlovsky, Stephen Peterman, and Roy Williams are all on the Lions' initial injury report for this week.
- Erin Henderson, Bernard Berrian, Vinny Ciurciu, Ray Edwards, Jim Kleinsasser, Sidney Rice, Benny Sapp, John Sullivan, and Madieu Williams are on Minnesota's injury report right now.
- Contrary to a report in the Dayton Daily News, the 49ers do not have interest in trading for Roy Williams.
- It has only been four games, but Leigh Bodden definitely has not lived up to the hype. Even worse, the Lions gave him a big contract in the offseason before he did anything on the field for them.
- Mike Furrey doesn't understand what keeps going wrong for the Lions on game day.
- Steve Mariucci thinks the Lions can win if they bring in the right personnel. He's correct in a "Captain Obvious" sort of way, but he does raise a good point that the Lions need someone that can bring in the right personnel. Matt Millen didn't bring in any of the right players or coaches, and even Rod Marinelli has brought in players that don't seem to be all that good.
If Detroit can hire a GM that in turn hires the right coach and signs and drafts the right players, then yes, the Lions can become winners. However, it would take an awful lot for all of those things to go correctly, and based on the past, it seems unlikely that Detroit will become a winner anytime soon. - The Red Wings begin their season tonight and will raise a banner honoring last season's Stanley Cup-winning team before the game. - No thanks to the Lions, the Sporting News ranked Detroit as the second best sports city behind Boston.

Foxworth Traded to Atlanta
As it turns out, the Broncos were on the verge of trading Domonique Foxworth as he has been sent to a new team. It was not the Lions, though. Foxworth was instead traded to the Atlanta Falcons in exchange for a conditional seventh-round pick that can turn into a sixth-rounder if he re-signs with his new team next season.
I'm not exactly sure if the Lions were in trade talks with Denver or not, but considering they have a history of trading with each other I would bet Detroit received a phone call or two. In the end if Denver only wanted a low draft pick it does make me wonder if Shaun Cody was involved. Maybe he was and the Lions didn't want to part ways with him.
Regardless of the rumor, Cody is still a Lion and Foxworth isn't. I'm just glad this rumor was put to bed quickly.

Rumor: Lions Close to Trading Shaun Cody to Denver
Mile High Report's TheSportsGuru was kind enough to pass along a rumor that involves both the Lions and Broncos. The rumor isn't necessarily a rumor on the Denver end of things, but for the Lions it is still a big rumor.
Basically, the rumor is that the Lions are in talks to send defensive tackle Shaun Cody to Denver in exchange for cornerback Domonique Foxworth. The reason I said that it isn't really a rumor for Denver's side of this deal is because Foxworth was actually sent home yesterday after being told he was going to be traded.
The cornerback was told by the team that he is close to being traded and to go home and wait to be traded. Foxworth said that he was told that there are several teams Denver is talking to and that he has no clue where he will play next week only that it won't be with the Broncos.
This rumor has credibility because Foxworth is about to be on the move, but how does Cody factor into this? Well, he is in the final year of his contract and the Lions would be smart to get some value out of him. Cody hasn't lived up to expectations at all in his time with the Lions and some even expected him to be cut from the team. Thanks to a good training camp and preseason that didn't happen, but it wouldn't be surprising to see the Lions trade him, especially since they have six defensive tackles on the roster right now. Getting rid of one wouldn't hurt depth very much, and adding another cornerback would improve the secondary.
If this rumored trade develops at all we should hear about it today considering Foxworth was actually sent home. That indicates that the Broncos are very close to a deal if they haven't reached one already, and where there's smoke there's usually fire, so the fact that the Lions are mentioned in this rumor likely means they are at least involved in talks with the Broncos.

Tuesday Notes: Favre and Millen Talk Football, Groundhogs
- The fifth day of Lions training camp was pretty much the same as the previous four. The team wore full pads in the morning and shells in the afternoon, and both sessions were outdoors. Also, the PUP list still is the same.
- Detroit's two practices today will be open to the general public. Gates open a half hour before the practices start (8:35 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.), and only the first 700 fans will be allowed in. The morning session is a full practice, but the afternoon one is special teams only.
If you happen to attend one of the practices, make sure to share your thoughts on the experience by writing a FanPost, leaving a comment, or sending me an e-mail. - Brett Favre called Matt Millen shortly after retiring wondering if he (Favre) could still play. Favre and Millen also exchanged texts a few weeks ago, and the conversation was, well, interesting to say the least.
"The next time was probably three weeks ago,'' Millen said. "We texted back and forth. I told him I had a groundhog getting into my vegetable garden so I shot him. He said "Mmm, make a stew.'''
Millen finally said that Favre wanted to know if he could call the Lions GM for advice, and intelligently, Favre never did. Who honestly would take football advice from Matt Millen anyways? - Paris Lenon is still the Lions' starting middle linebacker.
- Rookie defensive end Cliff Avril has been pretty impressive in practice so far.
- Rod Marinelli wants fans to make noise when they attend open practices.
- With 2008 being the final year of his contract, defensive tackle Shaun Cody is getting serious about his play this season.
- Tim Ryan and Pat Kirwan's Sirius Satellite Radio show will be broadcast live from Lions training camp today.
- I didn't see this story until recently, but right tackle Gosder Cherilus wanted to be signed in time for the start of training camp. Although he does have some character issues due to his involvement in a bar brawl last summer, I have to respect his football attitude. He didn't want to fall behind at all, which is why he was at practice from the very start. I wish Jordon Dizon would have felt the same way.
- FSN Detroit won't air Rod Marinelli's weekly press conferences this season. Their contract with the Lions was up and was not renewed.

Wednesday Notes: Cody Hoping for Better Season
- With Shaun Rogers gone, one of the players that could replace him in the starting lineup is Shaun Cody. Cody struggled through injuries last season, but this year he is looking to play much better. If he's ever going to have a breakout season, he better do it now as this is the final year of his contract and he will be fighting for a roster spot if some of the other defensive tackles really stand out.
- Cody mentioned in the article linked above that he is trying to lose weight and also received phone calls from Rod Marinelli once a week during the offseason to remind him of football.
- One final thing worth mentioning from that article is that Lomas Brown said he is going to work with first-round draft pick Gosder Cherilus. Sounds like a good idea to me.
- Stephen Peterman follows a strict workout routine each day.
- Jeff Otah, a rookie offensive tackle, is recovering from a high-ankle sprain. On the day of the draft I said I would've rather had the Lions pick him instead of Cherilus, but looking back I probably disagree with that statement now.
- Rod Marinelli talks about the Lions new-look secondary.
