Both national and local analysts LOVE the Detroit Lions free agent addition of Kevin Zeitler.

On Monday night, news broke that the Detroit Lions have agreed to terms with veteran guard Kevin Zeitler on a one-year deal. Zeitler will likely step into a starting position—almost certainly right guard—giving the Lions offensive line a potential starting five again after losing Jonah Jackson in free agency.

Zeitler is a 12-year NFL veteran, meaning he brings a ton of experience to Detroit. In fact, according to Pro Football Reference, Zeitler’s 181 career starts rank 13th among all active NFL players (no longer including Jason Kelce and Fletcher Cox).

The addition makes sense on a lot of levels, and even though we don’t exactly know the terms of the deal yet, the Lions are already receiving a ton of national praise for the move.

Let’s take a look at some of the immediate reactions to the addition across Twitter.

First, here’s some insight from former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III, who points out that the veteran guard’s character will be a perfect fit with Dan Campbell and company:

The Detroit Lions are reportedly signing veteran guard Kevin Zeitler to a one-year contract.

The starting jobs on the Detroit Lions roster are slowly dwindling away. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Lions and a former Baltimore Ravens Pro Bowl guard Kevin Zeitler to a 1-year contract.

Zeitler, who just turned 34 years old, has played in 182 NFL games, making 181 starts—and all of them at right guard. The 12-year veteran is coming off his first Pro Bowl season, but he has been one of the more respected guards in the League for the better part of his career, and has only had one season where he scored below a 71 overall grade from PFF—back in 2020 with the New York Giants.

Throughout his time in the NFL, Zeitler has been very durable, starting over 1,000 snaps in nine of those seasons. Because of his vast experience at right guard, he will likely be penciled in as the Lions starter, and recently re-signed Graham Glasgow will likely shift to the left side—where he’s logged 1,219 snaps in his career, including 75 snaps last season.

While Zeitler will be the presumed starter for now, there’s a real chance he faces competition for his role. Because of his age, it’s clear Zeitler is not a long-term solution for the Lions, which may result in them using a high draft pick in order to solidify their offensive line for the future.

Tracking every piece of news and rumor surrounding the Detroit Lions and 2024 free agency.

The negotiating period of free agency is just hours away, with teams allowed to negotiate (through agents) with players set to become unrestricted free agents starting on Monday at Noon ET. At that time, teams are permitted to come to terms with an agreed contract that will only become official when the new league year starts on Wednesday, March 13. We’ll undoubtedly see some reported deals on Monday, and that includes a Detroit Lions team that is likely to be somewhat active in free agency.

When deals are agreed to or officially signed, we’ll notate it in our 2024 Detroit Lions offseason tracker. But there were also be news and rumors along the way. In fact, we’ve already heard the Lions connected to a few players. This post will serve as a collection of those news pieces. We’ll track which players the Lions are interested in and where they eventually end up. We’ll do the same with Lions free agents, if there are multiple teams interested in their services.

In short, we’re going to have all the comprehensive free agency coverage you could possibly need.

One small note: While this is a rumor tracker, we will only be documenting rumors from sources we personally trust.

The Detroit Lions restructured newly-traded-for cornerback Carlton Davis, lowering his cap hit significantly from $14.35 million.

When the Detroit Lions acquired cornerback Carlton Davis in a trade with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, they also acquired his hefty $14 million salary and $14.35 million cap hit. That figure immediately hit the Lions’ salary cap once the new league year hit and the trade was official, leading many to believe the Lions would extend or restructure the contract to give the Lions some more breathing room.

The Lions reportedly chose the latter of the options, as Jason Fitzgerald of Over The Cap reported. The Lions converted $6 million of that salary into a signing bonus—paid out immediately to Davis. Then the Lions added three void years to the contract, spreading out the cap hit of that $6 million signing bonus over the next four years ($1.5 million per year).

Old contract

$14 million salary

Up to $500,000 in per game roster bonus ($352,941 likely to be earned based on 12 games played in 2023)

Cap hit: $14.35 million

And here’s his new contract:

2024:

$8 million salary

$1.5 million in signing bonus proration

Up to $500,000 in per game roster bonus

Cap hit: $9.85 million

2025 (automatically voids):

$4.5 million in dead cap (all 3 remaining void years accelerate to 2025 cap)

So while the signing bonus is technically spread out right now through the 2027 season, as soon as the contract automatically voids next year on February 20, 2025, all of the remaining prorated signing bonus hits the cap, resulting in a significant $4.5 million in dead cap next year, even though Davis is not signed for 2025. Detroit could always choose to re-sign or extend Davis, but they’ll still have to account for that $4.5 million.

The Lions aren’t exactly creating cap space out of nowhere. They’re essentially just pushing about a third of Davis’ sizable cap hit into next year to ease the immediate hit, provide more space to make more moves, and transfer that extra cap into a year in which the salary cap is expected to be higher than it was this year.

Breaking down Detroit Lions players who benefitted from the team’s moves in free agency so far.

The Detroit Lions have made their initial moves in free agency, and the impact of their additions (and subtractions) will have a ripple effect across the roster. For example, the addition of a guy like DJ Reader is bound to have an impact on everyone else on the defensive line. Whereas, the loss of Jonah Jackson could have a negative impact on several players.

But, for now, let’s focus on the positive. Here are four “winners” on the Lions roster who will benefit from the moves made thus far in free agency.

Brodric Martin

Some may think the addition of Reader shows a lack of faith in the Lions’ 2023 third-round pick but I don’t see it that way. This coaching staff has often made it a priority to surround their young players with a talented veteran to help aid their development. Alim McNeill acknowledged having Michael Brockers around helped him approach the game differently. Alex Anzalone has been key in leading an extremely young linebacker group. Teddy Bridgewater was added to help Hendon Hooker (and Jameson Williams) along.

Now the Lions are giving Martin the same treatment. When I asked Reader if the Lions had approached him about mentoring Martin, his eyes lit up.

“I can’t wait to get my hands on him, just talk to him,” Reader said. “Talk to him about ball, how to play this position. Especially that nose guard position. It’s a unique position. There’s a right way to do it, there’s a wrong way to do it. And there’s just things you can learn that’ll help you out—especially, (since) you can’t be asked to take on double teams all the time.

“So hopefully I can help him a lot. I’m going to be in his ear about it. Whether he’s going to want to hear it or not, I’m going to be in his ear, just trying to help and pushing him to be better, because you want your team to be in a great spot.”

Aidan Hutchinson

Martin isn’t the only one who will benefit from Reader’s addition. The Lions have lacked an interior push for years, which makes life tough for an edge rusher. Players like Hutchinson rack up pressures all the time, but if the opposing quarterback has a lane to escape up the middle with no interior pass rush, it won’t result in a sack.

Reader may not have a ton of sacks on his resume (9.5 sacks over eight years) but don’t read that as he doesn’t impact the passing game. He does. And pairing him with Alim McNeill means Detroit can still generate pressure on early downs without sacrificing their run defense.

Hutchinson should also benefit from the signing of edge defender Marcus Davenport, who could command some extra attention if he can recapture some of his old magic.

Jameson Williams

At the NFL Combine, Lions coach Dan Campbell expressed a ton of optimism about Williams’ development in 2023. The 2022 first-round pick finished the season strongly and showed that he can be a more consistent player beyond just the big, flashy plays. Campbell’s expectation is for him to be a full-time starter in 2024.

“He is going to push to be a full-time starter now, and that’s what we’re looking for,” Campbell said. “We’ve said it before: everybody grows at a different rate, and maybe it’s taken him a little bit longer, but he is developing and he’s growing and he is certainly one of the team. The kid’s come on. So we’ve got high hopes for him, we see him continuing to grow as long as he gets back and puts the work in—like we believe he will—because he’s shown that. He’s only going to get better and better and better.”

That may all be true, but Detroit certainly had an opportunity to give him some competition in free agency. They didn’t. There are still some talented receivers out there, Detroit could re-sign Josh Reynolds, or they may invest in the position at the NFL Draft, but for now, the opportunity is all of Williams to take that next step to be a true difference-maker in Detroit.

Cameron Sutton

Sutton’s first year in Detroit was a tough one. By just about every metric—be it PFF grade or passer rating allowed—it was his worst season since his first couple of years in the NFL when he was only a depth player.

But many believed Sutton has always been a No. 2 cornerback who was living the tough life of a CB1 in Detroit. Faced with the incredibly daunting task of going against the opponent’s top receivers (think Justin Jefferson, CeeDee Lamb, and Mike Evans), Sutton struggled immensely.

Now that job likely belongs to Carlton Davis, giving Sutton the opportunity to have his career bounce back as the team’s CB2.

That said, it’s not all great news for Sutton. Detroit brought in legit competition that could very well challenge Sutton for a starting job. Don’t count out the possibility of Emmanuel Moseley or Amik Robertson winning a spot in the starting lineup. Detroit also could very well draft a cornerback highly as well.

The Lions have said time and time again that it doesn’t matter where you were drafted or how much you’re getting paid, the best player plays, and they’ve followed through with that. Just ask Derrick Barnes or Malcolm Rodriguez.

Brad Holmes has made some solid moves so far during free agency. But is there a move you wish he had made?

The first wave of free agency is over, and with it, many teams across the NFL have bolstered their rosters with aspirations of success. While the Detroit Lions have added talent in multiple ways, it is always worth comparing to the rest of the league.

The big, multi-year contracts with hundreds of millions of dollars always dominate the headlines, as do the new faces in new places. The 2024 edition of free agency has not only seen NFL staples join new teams, but also a carousel of Madden-worthy trades. Justin Fields to the Pittsburgh Steelers? Keenan Allen to the Chicago Bears? Carlton Davis to the Lions? These are just some of the trades affecting the NFC North, let alone the NFL as we know it.

The next wave of free agents will trickle in in the lead up to the 2024 NFL Draft, and while Brad Holmes will undoubtedly make a few more moves, the biggest moves are all but over. Looking at the rest of the league and their moves, is there a deal you wish Holmes had pulled the trigger on?

Today’s Question of the Day is:

Is there a move that you wish the Lions had made in free agency?

My answer: Signing safety Geno Stone, who signed a two-year, $15 million deal with the Cincinnati Bengals.

There are three moves I want to mention, but their fits with the Lions were not ideal. I think the Steelers got excellent value trading for Fields for a conditional sixth-round pick, but Detroit was not a logical destination for the former Bears quarterback given the presence of Hendon Hooker and the division rivalry between the Lions and Bears. I also think the Miami Dolphins made a great move by signing cornerback Kendall Fuller to a two-year, $16.5 million deal. However, following the Lions’ trade for Davis and signing of Amik Robertson, I don’t think this signing made sense for Detroit. Finally, the Lions will certainly miss guard Jonah Jackson, but given his three-year, $51 million deal with the Los Angeles Rams, I think he priced himself out of Detroit.

While the Lions have shored up their cornerback room, I think their safety group is still needing another piece or two. Kerby Joseph and Ifeatu Melifonwu are the probable starters for 2024, but the only other pure safety on the roster is undrafted free agent Brandon Joseph. Tracy Walker was released, while C.J. Gardner-Johnson signed a three-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles. Considering that the Lions’ safeties accounted for 2,410 snaps in 2023, the Lions need a capable player to take some of those plays.

While the Lions could very well address this in the draft or the next wave of free agency, I think signing Geno Stone was a move I wish Brad Holmes had made. Stone is an excellent safety in coverage, which would have complemented the solid run defense that Kerby Joseph and Melifonwu provide.

A two-year deal for just $15 million is beyond reasonable for a soon-to-be 25-year-old safety on the rise. Xavier McKinney earned a four-year, $68 million deal with the Green Bay Packers. Gardner-Johnson, despite missing most of last season, got $33 million from the Eagles on his three-year deal. I don’t believe the difference between Stone and either of these players is worth tens of millions.

With a safety in Stone off the board, along with Jordan Fuller signing a one-year, $5.25 million contract with the Carolina Panthers, I think the Lions are now in the market for a veteran, rather than a player entering their prime. Players like Quandre Diggs, Eddie Jackson, or John Johnson are strong candidates to form a safety trio with Joseph and Melifonwu.

Looking back at the first wave of free agency, which moves stand out as ones you wish the Lions had made? Let us know in the comments below.

Remember some of the hot takes from when the Detroit Lions passed on Justin Fields to select Penei Sewell? We do.

The NFL Draft is full of overreactions and hot takes. Armchair fans and analysts are more than happy to weigh in on picks and attempt to ridicule teams for taking one player over another. This is especially prevalent among fans wanting to dunk on their favorite team's division rivals.

For example, here’s a great screen grab from our own Ryan Mathews, capturing Green Bay Packers analysts reacting to the Detroit Lions taking running back Jahmyr Gibbs with the No. 12 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft—you know, before he made the Pro Bowl as a rookie.

The Detroit Lions are entering wave two of free agency. Which player available would be best for the team?

The first week of free agency is basically in the books, and the Detroit Lions had an active, but selective week of transactions... just as general manager Brad Holmes told us he would.

From Monday through Saturday night, this has been Detroit’s complete scoreboard:

You can see the entire list of Lions offseason moves and losses here.

You’re unlikely to agree with every move they made or chose not to make, but it would be hard to argue that anything they’ve done so far has been overly surprising. That said, there is still plenty of work to do, and Holmes has done a pretty good job in the past finding gems beyond the top names in the past (Alex Anzalone, Kalif Raymond, etc.).

So today’s Question of the Day is:

What second-wave free agency move should the Lions make?

My answer: You could make a legitimate argument that the Lions have reasonable and quality starters at every position right now... except one: left guard. You could certainly make the argument or hope that someone like Colby Sorsdal or Kayode Awosika could step in between Taylor Decker and Frank Ragnow and be just fine, but.. that requires a little bit more of offseason rosiness than I’m capable of.

The easy answer is to just grab a guard early in April’s draft and they’re fine, but that isn’t Holmes’ style. He’ll grab a guard if the right one is there, but if the right prospect isn’t there, he’s not going to settle or reach for someone at a position of need. So, Detroit needs to go into the draft with someone they’re comfortable starting.

A short-term deal with a veteran makes perfect sense. It gives the Lions an option immediately, but still allows them to draft highly at the position. The guard market is drying up relatively quickly, but there are still a few players capable of starting. A reunion with Laken Tomlinson would likely be on the cheaper end, but if the Lions could coax Kevin Zeitler away from Baltimore, that would be ideal. Zeitler, who at 33 years old last year somehow earned his first Pro Bowl appearance, would keep the offensive line a strength while giving Detroit a nice mentor should they draft an offensive lineman in April.
