Detroit Lions Training Camp
Detroit Lions Training Camp Comes To A Close
- Today's practice marked the close of Detroit Lions training camp. Practice will obviously continue as the Lions close out the preseason and get ready for the regular season, but the training camp portion of the summer is now technically over.
- Wide receiver Calvin Johnson returned to practice after missing a couple days with a sore shoulder.
- Defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch, who also has a sore shoulder, was out once again.
- Running back Jahvid Best and wide receiver Titus Young were able to practice again.
- Cornerback Alphonso Smith was not able to make his 2011 practice debut. This means he is still on the active/non-football injury list.
- According to Tom Leyden, defensive tackle Quinn Pitcock received a challenge from Lions coaches to catch a punt from Nick Harris. As you might expect considering he's a defensive tackle, Pitcock didn't make the catch, and the team got a kick (no pun intended) out of it.
- The CBS broadcast crew of Greg Gumbel, Dan Dierdorf and Lesley Visser attended practice to prepare for Saturday's game.
Detroit Lions Training Camp: Jahvid Best Returns To Practice
- Don't forget: Thursday's practice at 11:15 a.m. is the final session that is open to the public this year.
- Detroit Lions running back Jahvid Best returned to practice today. This was his first day of practice since he suffered an apparent concussion against the Cleveland Browns last Friday. Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said yesterday that Best was cleared to practice, and he got back on the field today.
- Wide receiver Calvin Johnson and defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch did not return to practice. Both were sidelined again due to shoulder injuries.
- Wide receiver Titus Young was once again able to practice for the Lions. He isn't sure if he will play on Saturday against the New England Patriots, but by all accounts he really wants to make his preseason debut for the Lions. Of course, if the coaches don't feel like he's ready, there's no point in rushing him back for a preseason game, so it will ultimately be their call.
- Wide receiver Rashied Davis and offensive tackle Gosder Cherilus were back today after getting Tuesday off.
- Cornerback Alphonso Smith did not practice, although it sure seems like he is getting close to making his 2011 practice debut.
Detroit Lions Training Camp: Notes From Tuesday's Practice
- Wide receiver Titus Young went through all of Tuesday's practice, according to Jim Schwartz.
"He made it all the way through. He went all the way through practice. Last period, he was still getting reps out there; we were scout team on some periods so it may have looked like he was out on some. Some of those periods, we just kept him warm; it might have looked like he got pulled out, but he wasn’t. He was just keeping his hamstring warm.
Young apparently was feeling good enough to run back a punt during practice, although special teams coach Danny Crossman wasn't exactly pleased that Young did that.
"That’s something that he’s going to have to get over. He’s not over the hump yet, but he’s probably right on that hump and we’ve just got to keep him going and going in the right direction." - Defensive tackle Andre Fluellen practiced for the first time since breaking his hand. He was still wearing a big cast on his hand, though.
- Wide receiver Calvin Johnson missed Tuesday's practice as he continues to recover from a shoulder injury.
- Tight end Richard Dickson missed practice again, and apparently he has a knee injury that might not be of the short-term variety. If that's the case, he will likely be waived/injured for the second straight year.
- Wide receiver Rashied Davis and offensive tackle Gosder Cherilus got the day off to rest.
- It looks like cornerback Alphonso Smith is almost ready to be activated from the active/non-football injury list.
Detroit Lions Training Camp: Notes From Monday's Practice
- Running back Jahvid Best was out again because of his concussion, but Jim Schwartz reiterated that Best is expected to return "pretty soon."
- Defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch missed practice for the second day in a row, but as speculated, he doesn't have an injury. The Lions are just resting him, although he isn't all that thrilled with being kept off the field.
"I mean, I hate rest," he said, "but I always want to do what's in the best interest of this team. I'm here to help us win games, so if we feel like guys need rest and certain guys need more work, then that's what we're going to do."
- In addition to Best and Vanden Bosch, the Lions were also without tight end Richard Dickson, offensive tackle Jason Fox, defensive tackle Nick Fairley, defensive tackle Andre Fluellen and cornerback Alphonso Smith on Monday.
- After missing Sunday's practice, fullback Matt Clapp, offensive tackle Corey Hilliard and defensive tackle Quinn Pitcock returned on Monday.
- Wide receiver Calvin Johnson said his shoulder is sore, but he is "working through it."
- Cornerback Aaron Berry and safety Erik Coleman got some work with the No. 1 defense today.
- Several former Lions players attended Monday's practice, including Mel Farr, Maurice Harvey, Allen Hughes, Scott Kowalkowski, Rudy Redmond, Larry Tharpe and Bobby Thompson
Detroit Lions Training Camp: Titus Young, Maurice Morris, Others Return To Practice
- Jeff Backus wasn't the only Detroit Lions player to return to practice on Sunday. Quite a few others were back at practice after missing some time, including running back Maurice Morris, wide receiver Titus Young, wide receiver Demario Ballard, tight end Tony Scheffler and cornerback Chris Houston.
- Young only participated in the 7-on-7 drill and then left the field. Jim Schwartz says this was by design and that Young was doing conditioning stuff.
- Four of the players who missed Sunday's practice were fullback Matt Clapp, offensive tackle Corey Hilliard, defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch and defensive tackle Quinn Pitcock.
- Wide receiver Calvin Johnson was back on the practice field after not playing on Friday against the Browns.
- Backus was glad to be back on the field after missing an extended period of time for the first time in his career.
- "Wide receiver" Stefan Logan practiced at running back today. Schwartz had this to say about Logan's versatility:
"That’s what he did for us last year. He carried the ball a lot of times. He’s a good returner, good cover man—he’s a multi-dimensional football player. If he wasn’t 5’3", he might be able to play some safety.
Last year Logan didn't catch a single pass, but he did have 15 carries. It would probably be more accurate to list him as a running back instead of a wide receiver.
"He’s a football player. He’s short, but he’s not small. We can do a lot of things (with him) and that’s been in our plans. We haven’t seen a lot of that stuff in training camp, mainly because we’re looking at other players and other positions that are competing for spots and things like that. Honestly, Logan’s really not competing for any spot, it’s just a matter of getting him ready and getting him going. It’s very difficult to get him some returns now in the preseason, but he got one in the first game, and we’ll keep him going there and do some other stuff with him too." - Defensive tackle Nick Fairley is no longer wearing a walking boot. Hopefully that's a sign that his recovery is going well and he will be back soon.
- The Lions are scheduled to practice at 9:15 a.m. on Monday and Tuesday. Monday's practice is not open to the public, but Tuesday's session is going to be if the weather is nice.
Detroit Lions Training Camp: Notes From Thursday's Practice
- Today's Detroit Lions practice had to be moved inside due to bad weather.
- The Lions are set to have a day off on Saturday and have a practice at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday. That practice will be open to the public, as will Monday's practice at 9:15 a.m.
- Jim Schwartz described today's session as a "light practice."
- CB Eric Wright returned to practice today.
- WR Titus Young, WR Demario Ballard, TE Tony Scheffler and S John Wendling were among the players sidelined from practice today.
- The good news is that Young was off to the side running routes and catching passes from Zac Robinson.
- CB Chris Houston did practice, but not for the entire session.
- DT Andre Fluellen got his cast off today, indicating that he could be close to returning.
- CB Alphonso Smith also may be getting close to returning. Today he was doing "light cutting" off to the side during practice.
- Rashied Davis was the Lions' third receiver today.
Detroit Lions Training Camp: Chris Houston, Corey Williams Return To Practice
- Originally there wasn't a practice scheduled for Thursday, but the Detroit Lions announced that they will hold one at 10:15 a.m. It will be open to the public.
- CB Chris Houston and DT Corey Williams returned to practice after dealing with injuries earlier this week. CB Eric Wright, on the other hand, was out.
- S John Wendling missed practice and had his right leg wrapped.
- WR Titus Young and WR Demario Ballard once again missed practice.
- Jim Schwartz ordered the team to run gassers after a "tussle" between Kyle Vanden Bosch and Corey Hilliard set off a bit of a brawl. Schwartz had this to say about the incident:
"We had a little too much energy during practice,'' Schwartz said. "We needed to expel it somehow so we ran for a little bit and then we got back to work. It was probably a good time to do it. It was about as hot as we can get up here and we took advantage of it."
A separate "scuffle" happened after Matt Clapp had what Chris McCosky described as a cheap shot on Willie Young. - TE Tony Scheffler had to leave practice and get stitches after cutting the webbing between two of his fingers. Ouch.
Detroit Lions Training Camp: Nick Fairley Making Progress
- The Detroit Lions have moved up Wednesday's open practice to 2:45 p.m. Originally it was scheduled to begin at 3:15 p.m.
- DT Nick Fairley is no longer wearing a cast on his injured foot. Instead he just has a walking boot, which allowed him to watch practice from the sidelines for the first time since he had surgery. Since the Lions didn't want him to be on the field and anywhere near the action with a cast and crutches, he was forced to observe from a distance.
- DT Corey Williams, CB Chris Houston and CB Eric Wright were among the players out today. All three of them are day-to-day.
- WR Titus Young once again missed practice.
- QB Shaun Hill didn't take any reps today because Jim Schwartz wanted Drew Stanton and Zac Robinson to get more action than they usually do.
- WR Demario Ballard is considered day-to-day with a foot injury.
