Ask POD: What Are The Chances Of The Lions Signing Nnamdi Asomugha?

DALLAS TX - FEBRUARY 04: Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award finalist Nnamdi Asomugha of the Oakland Raiders speaks during a press conference at the Super Bowl XLV media center on February 4 2011 in Dallas Texas.

Anonymous writes: "Do you think Detroit Lions have a chance to sign Nnamdi Asomugha?"

Without a doubt, the free agent most NFL fans will be keeping an eye on once the lockout ends and the league year begins is cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha. In a usual offseason he would be going through minicamps and OTAs with his new team, but we don't even know where Asomugha might be interested in signing thanks to the lockout. There have been whispers about possible landing spots, but until free agency opens it will not be clear where Asomugha is likely to end up.

Ask POD: Time To Trade Shaun Hill?

DETROIT - NOVEMBER 25: Shaun Hill #14 of the Detroit Lions looks for a open reciever while playing the New England Patriots on November 25 2010 at Ford Field in Detroit Michigan. (Photo by Gregory Shamus/Getty Images)

Casey writes: With all the uncertainty of the CBA and free agency and the number of teams with a need at QB, what do you think the chances are Martin Mayhew could trade Shaun Hill, and what might the Lions be able to get for him? With teams like Seattle, Arizona and Washington still needing QBs and teams like Cincinnati, Carolina and Tennessee all having the use for a veteran quarterback to help the rookies, it would seem to me a player like Shaun Hill might actually have some value on the market. With Drew Stanton playing the best he ever has at the end of last season, he could move into the backup role fairly easily.

If fans take anything away from the 2010 season, it should be that you don't undervalue the importance of quarterback depth. Yes, the injuries Lions QBs suffered involved a lot of bad luck, but the fact of the matter is they had problems staying healthy. Is it entirely possible that Matthew Stafford will make it through 2011 without any issues and Shaun Hill and Drew Stanton will never see the field? Of course it is, but there's no guarantee that will happen.

Ask POD: Who To Keep On The Defensive Line?

Eddie writes: "I wonder how many of the lower defensive linemen the Lions are going to keep. Is Willie Young gone? Andre Fluellen? Sammie Hill? I guess we will see how it shakes out after training camp, but I like the look of a lot of those guys."

Each of the last two years, the Detroit Lions have kept nine defensive linemen on their roster following the final round of roster cuts. Things can obviously change from year to year depending on what the depth looks like, but I think that's a pretty good indication of how many defensive linemen will be around this year when the 53-man roster is established.

Both in 2009 and 2010, five of the defensive linemen that made the team were defensive ends. A year ago, Kyle Vanden Bosch, Cliff Avril, Turk McBride, Lawrence Jackson and Willie Young made the team, and I expect them all to be back in 2011. Only Young seems in real danger of being on the chopping block, and if he was let go the Lions likely would try to sign him to the practice squad.

Ask Pride Of Detroit

As you can probably tell from both the decrease in activity since the draft and the stories that have been considered newsworthy lately, there isn't a whole lot going on in the NFL world right now. The week before the 2011 NFL Draft and the week after were great with there being so much news and so much conversation, but we've hit the point in the offseason where there isn't much to talk about. Even in a regular offseason there isn't much going on in May, but it's even worse this year thanks to the lockout.

In order to combat the lack of news/things to talk about, I have come up with something new that involves readers: Ask Pride of Detroit. As the name suggests, the focus of the series is readers asking POD questions. It is essentially a mailbag type of post that you may have seen on a number of other blogs. You ask questions and I will do my best to answer them and hopefully generate some discussion along the way.

If you have a question you want to submit, send an email to askprideofdetroit@gmail.com, send a tweet to @PrideOfDetroit or leave a comment on Pride of Detroit's Facebook page. I will round up questions and answer them every so often in posts on this site. I'm not sure just yet how regular of a feature this will be, but if you ever have a Lions/NFL-related question, send it to me and it will probably get answered at some point. I think this could become a recurring feature even after the lockout and offseason come to an end, but it will depend on the response I get from you guys.

(Side note: Please keep the questions on topic. I will only choose the best/most interesting ones to answer anyway, but if you send me one that is not related to the Lions or the NFL it will just be deleted. Thanks.)
