Lions Quotes: Jim Schwartz's End-Of-Season Press Conference
Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz met with the media on Monday afternoon to wrap up the 2011 season. He addressed a number of interesting topics during the presser, including the status of several injured players, if he expects all of his coordinators back and the defense's issues late in the season. You can check out his comments below (transcript via the Lions media staff).
On how he feels now about the Saints game: "Probably the way I felt after the game. We were able to score on offense, missed a couple opportunities there but it was really more about missed opportunities on defense. With a team like the Saints, they are going to get some yards, but you got to find a way to stop drives and that is going to come from 3rd downs that is going to come from turnovers. We stopped some drives in the first half with turnovers and had some other plays that we didn't make. We didn't do a very good job on 3rd down. Even when we stopped them on 3rd down, we allowed the conversion on 4th down and they were able to keep drives alive and then big plays, particularly in coverages that we shouldn't give up big plays. It just made it that we couldn't score enough with them because of those things."

Lions Quotes: Jim Schwartz, Others Discuss Win Over Chargers, Playoff Berth
Via the always great Detroit Lions PR staff comes quotes from after Saturday's win over the San Diego Chargers. Jim Schwartz, Matthew Stafford and others discussed the victory, as well as the team's first playoff berth in 12 years. You can check out what they had to say below.
LIONS HEAD COACH JIM SCHWARTZ
Opening statement: "There's going to come a time when we don't celebrate going to the playoffs or getting into the playoffs, but that's not going to be tonight. It's been a long time coming and obviously it's something that we haven't done as an organization for a long time. Especially to do it at home in front of a great home crowd on Christmas Eve. My kids have that little application to find out where Santa is - he was at Ford Field tonight."
On the gesture of giving fans a high five after the game: "Unless something really strange happens, it's probably the last home game that we're going to play this year. So our crowd's made a big difference. We've said a lot about how they don't just go to the games, they participate in the games. I'd like a few less waves when our offense has the ball when we're holding the lead and we don't want to get any penalties, but our crowd's been great and they deserve to celebrate it and that's why we stayed out."
Recapping Last Week's Jim Schwartz Media Blitz
Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz did numerous interviews last week and touched on a variety of subjects. Below are the highlights of what he had to say.
On the NFL lockout: "The one thing we can't control and can't worry about is what's going on in the courts and in negotiations. Our job is to be ready when they call. We had the draft to be able to spend a lot of our time on. Now we're spending a lot of time on early-season opponents. We've found a way to keep busy."
On Matthew Stafford: "We need to keep him healthy. That's been the issue. Matt doesn't need to develop anymore. He doesn't need to learn the offense. He doesn't need to work on accuracy or anything. He needs to be out there playing. He played three games for us last year and he left all three games with the lead. (He had) six touchdowns and one interception in the equivalent of about two games. You put those stats over the course of a season and you see how special a player he can be. That's the difference; you won't be a good team for an extended period of time without a good quarterback. We have one with Matt. We just need to keep him on the field."

NFL Draft 2011 Quotes: Martin Mayhew, Jim Schwartz Discuss Day 2 Picks
Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew and head coach Jim Schwartz met with the media to talk about their second-round picks of Titus Young and Mikel Leshoure. Via the Detroit Lions comes a transcript of each media session.
GM MARTIN MAYHEW
Opening statement
"Titus Young, the guy is an explosive playmaker; he's a stick of dynamite. He's got speed, he's got great hands, he's another guy we were really happy to see on the board at our turn to pick. He's got a role on offense right now, he's probably going to have the opportunity to step in as our third guy. We haven't had great production from that spot in the last couple of years and we feel that Titus is the guy that can step in and solve that problem for us."
On whether he's concerned about the spots at corner and linebacker
"I'm concerned about those spots at corner and linebacker. I'm not concerned about taking the best player that we can find and have a very defined role on our football team. What I told you a week ago, we're going to draft the best players that we can find. We feel like we've done a good job, especially last year, after the draft process, we think we'll do the same thing this year. There will be some opportunities to fill some gaps later on."
2011 Lions Draft Picks Titus Young, Mikel Leshoure Talk About Being Picked
The Detroit Lions' two second-round draft picks, Titus Young and Mikel Leshoure, had conference calls with the media after being selected by the Lions. The transcripts of those calls, via the Detroit Lions, are below.
On his thoughts about being drafted by the Detroit Lions
"I just thought about how good God was, first and foremost. Just with all the hard work and everything and for it to finally pan out and actually seeing it and seeing is believing for me. When I see things I become a real firm believer. Like my mom says, 'You've got to see it in black and white for it to be true. So I feel like that I'm just very excited that Detroit picked me, the Detroit Lions. That's my mother's hometown; that's where my family is originally from. I'm just so excited."
On the opportunity to play alongside WRs Calvin Johnson and Nate Burleson
"Calvin Johnson is extremely real already. They have to use a lot of people to guard him already. I feel like with me coming in and hopefully coming in and contributing early, if the Lord says the same, I feel like the sky is the limit for the Detroit Lions and the City of Detroit. I feel like when they come to the games, they're going to be able to come and have a lot of fun and a lot of entertainment."
2011 NFL Draft: Quotes From Detroit Lions Pick Nick Fairley
New Detroit Lions defensive tackle Nick Fairley held a conference call with the media after he was picked 13th overall in the 2011 NFL Draft. The transcript of the call, via the Lions, is below.
On how he felt when the Detroit Lions drafted him
"Aww man, it was a great feeling. My dream finally came true; to finally play in the NFL, it's been a dream since I was eight-years old. Whoever picked me matters, but I always tell folks that whatever team I go to was going to be my No. 1 pick."
On how much he knows about the Lions' defensive line and the personnel on it
"I know a little bit about it. They have Ndamukong Suh and they've got a guy that's a defensive end that's a hard worker; I'm just looking to come in and work my butt off and contribute to the team."
2011 NFL Draft: Quotes From Martin Mayhew, Jim Schwartz
Via the Detroit Lions, below is a transcript of what Martin Mayhew and Jim Schwartz had to say during a press conference following the Nick Fairley pick.
GM Martin Mayhew
Opening statement
"Nick Fairley - outstanding player. In our mock draft yesterday, we went through some scenarios and we were hopeful that he would fall to us. We felt like the need for quarterbacks might push him down some. He was very high on our draft board and I think he really helps our defensive line - our defense as a whole. Very physical guy. He gives our defense a physical presence and we have a great tandem - actually three great defensive tackles with Corey Williams, Suh and Nick Fairley."
On where he will play those guys
"That's up to the coaches. They'll all play. I think it's great to have three of them because they can stay fresh. Ndamukong played over 950 plays last year, which is a lot of plays. But it helps our pass rush to have those guys be fresh. It helps our run game. It helps our defense as a whole to have three guys who can play that way."
