Around SBN: Raiders' GM Begins The Purge

Training Camp Notes: 7/26

Apologies for the delayed post recapping yesterday's first day of training camp, but I got delayed and then had some computer problems.  Anyways, we have a lot to talk about, both about training camp and off the field, so here are some notes about day 1 of practice.
  • RB Kevin Jones, WR Devale Ellis, WR Shaun McDonald, TE Dan Campbell, and DT Shaun Rogers began training camp on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list.  That means none will participate in practice until being removed from the list, meaning they would be healthy enough to do so. It is expected that McDonald will be on the PUP list briefly.  Jones will probably be the biggest question mark since his injury was the most severe, but the other three shouldn't be gone for too long.

  • Running back Brian Calhoun didn't practice in the morning session, but Coach Rod Marinelli basically said that it wasn't a big deal.  He was expected to be in the afternoon session, so I doubt it had to do with any serious injuries.

  • Wide receiver Marcus Robinson was moved to the injured reserve, but right now, nobody is really sure why.

  • Damien Woody, after restructuring his contract and losing a ton of weight over the offseason, is back with the starting offense at guard.

  • MLive.com's Tom Kowalski had good things to say about Drew Stanton's first day of practice, saying that we should be encouraged.  Dan Orlovsky was the one taking snaps as the backup QB, but Stanton still was on the field quite a bit.

  • The Detroit News has a great article about Pride of Detroit's favorite Lion, Ikaika Alama-Francis.  He reiterates throughout the article that he is there to work, just as he did in an interview with POD.  You can definitely tell that this is one player who has his priorities in the right order.

  • The afternoon session of practice was moved indoors due to bad weather in the Allen Park area.
  • Contrary to previous reports earlier this week, the Lions will hold an open practice for fans at Ford Field. It won't be a scrimmage like last year, but it will provide fans an opportunity to get their first look at the '07 team. This practice will be on August 4, and will start at 5:00 p.m. This date should sound familiar because it is the same day former Lions tight end Charlie Sanders is being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. With that in mind, the Lions will broadcast the induction on Ford Field's video boards. For more information, visit the Lions' official website.
