Jeff Backus, the Lions' franchise tag, continued his negotiations with management to agree to a long-term deal. Backus received a 1-year offer with $6,983,000 because of the franchise tag, but he is looking for a long-term deal. Backus hasn't been anywhere else in his pro career, and really didn't go too far from college as he attended Michigan.
On May 10th, the Detroit Free Press reported that real negotiations had begun and went well, but-yes, there's a but-the 2 sides are still far away from reaching a deal. Backus and his agent, Patrick Dye, met with Matt Millen, Rod Marinelli, and COO Tom Lewand.
The good news is that Backus and management are now all on the same page, but now the deal just has to be made, which is appearing that it will take a while. I'm very hopeful that a deal with Backus can be made soon to not only get Backus, a great player, signed, but to also get him into the new system which takes some time to learn. No word just yet on when the next negotiations will take place, but I'd expect them to be sometime next week.
