The news that Donnie Henderson and Larry Beightol had been fired was confirmed by Rod Marinelli in his final weekly press conference of the season, but there was another announcement of a coach leaving. Special teams coordinator Chuck Priefer, who has been with the Lions for 10 seasons, has decided to retire as announced by Rod Marinelli (link opens press conference audio).

Priefer is one of the best special teams coaches in the league, so this leaves a bit of a void in that position. Over his time in the NFL, Priefer has worked as a special teams coach for the Packers, Chargers, and Lions. Throughout his career he has also been involved in coaching in the college ranks.

Special teams assistant Stan Kwan will be promoted to fill the job as special team coach.
