Shawne Merriman to Miss Lions Game

Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman is not going to play on Sunday due to an injury suffered on this play:

Merriman sprained a ligament in his left knee, which is why he won't play on Sunday for San Diego. He's not the only injured Charger either. Quarterback Phillip Rivers was banged up last Sunday and although he will play, I doubt he'll be 100% healthy.

Quarterback Philip Rivers is in a little better shape, saying he expects to play against the Lions even though he, too, has a sprained left knee.

Rivers either didn't want to be specific about his injury or was told not to discuss it with the media.

"I'll leave that up to the coach and the trainer as far as giving you the information," he said. "I don't try to get caught up in all the scientific words that are used."

Rivers wore a knee brace to his news conference on Monday.

"It was pretty sore this morning, but it shouldn't be anything I can't manage and get better during the week," Rivers said.

With Merriman being out I bet Jon Kitna is breathing a sigh of relief. And at the same time, if Rivers isn't completely healthy, that could be a bad thing in the sense that LT will get the ball more. That though alone scares me.
