Chargers to Hire Norv Turner as Next Head Coach

ESPN's Len Pasquarelli is reporting that the Chargers have decided to hire Norv Turner as the team's next head coach.  Turner would take the place of Marty Schottenheimer if he is in fact hired and would leave San Francisco to go to southern California.

Hoping the third time will be a winner for Norv Turner, the San Diego Chargers on Monday morning reached agreement with the San Francisco offensive coordinator to succeed Marty Schottenheimer as head coach, ESPN.com has learned.

Contract details were not immediately available, but league sources and also sources close to Turner said the two sides were in accord on all major components.

One of six known candidates interviewed by San Diego officials after Schottenheimer was dismissed, Turner was the lone man with primary expertise on the offensive side. Originally, it was believed the Chargers preferred that their new head coach have a background on the defensive side of the ball.

This means that Mike Martz will be in Detroit for at least one more season.  It wasn't really a big concern that he would go to San Diego to fill the vacancy considering the Chargers never contacted the Lions for permission to interview him, but you never know.  Now that it appears this is almost official, we can rest easy again as Martz will be back.
