Lions Close to Naming Two New Assistants (UPDATED)

The Lions are in the market for a new defensive backs and quarterbacks coach, and appear to be ready to fill both positions. For the defensive backs coach, the Pewter Report is stating that the Lions have already hired Tampa Bay assistant DBs coach Jimmy Lake. Lake interviewed with the Lions last week and has connections with current defensive coordinator Joe Barry. The move makes sense considering he is familiar with the Tampa 2. Plus, the Buccaneers had the best pass defense in the league this past season, so Lake should help improve Detroit's horrific passing defense. Although he was only an assistant DBs coach, the hire still is a good one.

For the vacancy at quarterbacks coach, rumor has it that Scot Loeffler (pictured right) will be hired. Loeffler held the same position at the University of Michigan and was considered to be one of the best assistants on Lloyd Carr's staff, so this hire is also a good one in my opinion. Loeffler will have to help develop Drew Stanton, which should make for an interesting situation since Stanton is from MSU and Loeffler is from Michigan. I'm sure the two will get along fine, but I bet the rivalry is mentioned every now and then.

I would expect the Lions to announce these two hires in the next week once they become official.
