The Offseason Officially Begins

Now that the Super Bowl is behind us and the 2007-08 season is officially in our rear-view mirrors, it time to set our sights on the offseason.  For Lions fans, the offseason sadly is one of the more entertaining times of the year due to draft, but this time around things are a little different.  Rather than pick in the top 5 or the top 10, the Lions are selecting 15th in the draft.  Although that doesn't take away the importance of the pick, it is different.

With the offseason officially here, talk will likely revolve around the draft and free agency, which are the two most important things for the Lions if they ever plan on getting to the playoffs.  Both are vital as the Lions have a ton of needs that have to be addressed, and free agency and the draft are the only way improvement over a long period of time will happen.

Aside from the talk of adding and subtracting players from the Lions roster, there is also some exciting site news involving Pride of Detroit and the entire SB Nation network that I am happy to shed some light on.  To do that and more, here is an outline of what to expect during the offseason here at Pride of Detroit.

  • THE DRAFT - As I have already said, the NFL Draft is usually the best part of the year for Lions fans.  The draft provides excitement and hope that Matt Millen finally will take his head out of you no where and make a smart draft pick, and at the same time gives Lions fans a couple days to dream about what could happen in the future.

At POD, I am going to get my draft coverage started by first going through each position and seeing what is needed to make this team better.  After that, I will start to dive into the mock drafts out there and will begin to look at individual players once there is a better idea of what Detroit needs.  Also, with the combine taking place in Indy later this month, expect full coverage of that as we get a chance to see which players are truly deserving of being selected in the first round.
  • FREE AGENCY - Every year the Lions try to get better via free agency and sometimes they do sign players that help in big ways.  Most of the time, though, the free agents the Lions sign just end up being a waste, so this time around we will again be hopeful that Millen stops being an idiot, although that really is a pipe dream at best.  Regardless, POD will be following free agency and will have updates any time news relevant to the Lions breaks, so keep an eye out for that in the coming months.
  • SBN 2.0 - I can't share a ton of details right now, but by the time the draft arrives, Pride of Detroit and all the other SB Nation blogs will have a new look called "SBN 2.0."  It will change the visual look of all the blogs into a much nicer design and will provide a countless number of extra features for the readers and myself.  Again, I can't really get into it a ton right now, but by the end of the month you should be able to get a look at SBN 2.0 on some of SBN's baseball blogs.  I'll make sure to keep you all updated on that as well.

As you can see, the offseason has a lot in store for the Lions and this blog, so make sure to keep checking out Pride of Detroit daily even though there is no football being played.
