Rumor: Lions Release Kevin Jones

I stress that this is only a rumor at this point, but Pro Football Talk is reporting that the Lions have released running back Kevin Jones.

We recently heard a rumor that, if the Lions had signed running back Julius Jones, running back Kevin Jones would have been cut.

We’ve now been told that Kevin Jones is telling teammates that he has been released.

The rumor/report is not yet confirmed.  Stay tuned.

If true, this completely comes out of left field.  I know that Tatum Bell just re-signed recently, but that was to add depth to the running back position, not to get a player lined up to replace Jones as the Lions' starter.  It is only a rumor, as I already said, but only Matt Millen could be stupid enough to kill the entire depth chart at running back with a move like this.

Yes, Jones has had injury problems the last two years, but he was scheduled to return to Detroit recently to continue rehab as he was reportedly ahead of schedule.  It just doesn't make sense that the Lions would release him when depth is so thin already at running back.

It'll be interesting to see if this rumor turns into something more, so keep an eye on this story in the coming hours.

Update [2008-3-13 16:7:6 by Sean Yuille]: Pro Football Talk just posted this update on the rumor:
We’ve gotten confirmation from another source that running back Kevin Jones has been informed by the Detroit Lions that he will be released.

It’s not known whether the move has been made official.

Strap in, folks, this is about to be a bumpy ride.
