With the 30th pick of the 2010 Pride of Detroit Community Mock Draft, the Minnesota Vikings select Rutgers cornerback Devin McCourty.
Here is HoorayForEverything's reasoning for the pick:
Hell has frozen over in Minnesota... The Farvlings have ditched their GM and placed their 2010 hopes in the hands of an optimistic Lions fan named after a 20-year old Simpsons episode. (Is that show still going...why?) What could possibly go wrong?
Dan Williams is gone to San Diego, so the extension to the Williams Wall won't happen this year (I know people love him for the 3-4, but would he really be that bad of a pick at 30 for a 4-3 nose tackle?)
Continued after the jump...
The Purples have a real conundrum at QB. I am going on the premise that his highness simply wants to avoid training camp and will definitely be back for another year. So now I don't have to pick between Tebow and McCoy at 30 and get the lowest pick approval rating in history (although we are all Lions fans and I just stole our CB at 34 so it may still be pretty low).
That leaves 3 possibilities in my mind:
1) BPA
2) Safety
3) CornerbackBPA is tempting. I think Jermaine Gresham may fit that role and The Farve is never opposed to more pass-catching tight ends.
Safety is probably the biggest need, but we are down to 4th Safety on the board (Nate Allen) so it's not a no-brainer.
Cornerback is what I decided. Winfield is getting up there, and Griffin is going to be delayed significantly due to his nasty injury. McCourty is constantly being described as a great fit for the Cover-2 they play and is clearly winning the draft polls at SB Nation - Farve Edition.
So there it is. Detroit will have to surprise us now at 34. I wish I could sabotage the Vikings, but I took an oath to draft fairly. If it makes anyone feel better, I didn't promise to sign free agents with any ethics, so I am now on my way to sign Daunte Culpepper and Aveion Cason for 2010.....
