Safety Oshiomogho Atogwe officially became an unrestricted free agent at midnight. He and the Rams were unable to work out a long-term deal, and the Rams weren't about to re-tender him for close to $7 million. What this means is that Atogwe is no longer a restricted free agent, but rather an unrestricted free agent who can now sign wherever he wants.
Plenty of teams could use a safety like Atogwe, including the Lions. It's tough to say what their chances of landing Atogwe are because it's unknown if they will make a run at him and it's unknown what the market will be like for him. Adam Schefter tweeted yesterday that Atogwe could still sign with the Rams, but if that doesn't happen the Dolphins, Cowboys, and Vikings "might be interested." At this point you could probably find a source somewhere saying most teams are interested, which is why we will just have to wait and see what happens.
I do hope the Lions at least explore this option. While the Lions do have a number of players ready to compete for the starting safety spot opposite Louis Delmas, Atogwe could come in and lock up that job from the second he arrives in Allen Park. Signing him would definitely upgrade the safety position and the secondary as a whole. Of course, the Lions would only sign Atogwe for the right price, but hopefully they at least consider making the move.
