Former Lions running back Kevin Smith and former Cowboys offensive guard Leonard Davis headlined a large group of players that were in Allen Park earlier this week for a workout. The Lions spent some time during their bye week to host 24 players for the workout likely in order to assemble a list of free agents that are potentially worth bringing in should injuries happen down the stretch.
Although Smith and Davis received the most attention from fans following the workout, there were some other interesting names on the list, including former Lions running back Aaron Brown, former Lions center Chris Morris, former Steelers receiver Antwaan Randle El and former Packers quarterback Brian Brohm. Via Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio, the full list can be found after the jump.
Quarterback: Brian Brohm
Running backs: Kevin Smith, Aaron Brown, Lonyae Miller, Wynel Seldon
Wide receivers: Antwaan Randle El, Sam Aiken, Aaron Love, Charly Martin, Terrence Toliver
Tight ends: Ryan Goleski, Jonathan Stupar
Offensive guards: Leonard Davis, Garrett Chisolm
Center: Chris Morris
Defensive end: Chauncey Davis
Defensive tackles: Tony Brown, Jovan Haye
Linebackers: Nic Harris, Lance Laury
Defensive backs: Robert McClain, Kevin Payne
Punter: Jeremy Kapinos
Long snapper: Jake Ingram
This may seem a bit excessive, but Martin Mayhew is covering all of his bases in case there are any injuries during the second half of the season. Obviously, it's better to be prepared for the unexpected than to be caught off guard and left scrambling.
(Side note: As Florio pointed out, the fact that this list of names doesn't include guys like Tiki Barber and Terrell Owens should put all speculation about either being signed to rest. Considering neither could even secure a spot in a workout with more than 20-plus players, it's pretty evident there is zero interest in signing Barber or Owens.)
