When word came out earlier this week that the Green Bay Packers were planning to release linebacker Nick Barnett, Nate Burleson asked him if he had already booked a flight to Detroit. Barnett responded by telling Burleson to send him Martin Mayhew's number, indicating he wouldn't mind playing for the Detroit Lions.
Yesterday a couple reports came out suggesting the Lions will go after Barnett once he is released, and just a few minutes ago Tom Kowalski tweeted this:
According to a source close to the negotiations, the #LIONS are talking to Nick Barnett and trying to sign him to a free agent contract
Literally seconds before Kowalski tweeted that, Barnett said this on Twitter: "Ok not going to lie the bolts fans and lions go hard on twitter!!! I see a couple eagle fans and Tampa but overwhelmed by Detroit and SD." (Well done, Lions fans who are busy recruiting players on Twitter.) Barnett also tweeted something similar to what Stephen Tulloch had to say earlier this week: "Things are starting to move.... Decisions decisions decisions."
I don't believe an announcement has been made by the Packers about Barnett being released, but based on all of the tweets I just mentioned, I'm guessing he is currently a free agent (if not, say hello to more tampering charges) and that a decision on where he will sign could be nearing.
