The first serious in-season injury for the Detroit Lions happened during Sunday's game against the Minnesota Vikings. Linebacker Isaiah Ekejiuba went down with a shoulder injury, and it is severe enough that he will miss the rest of the season, according to Tim Twentyman.
The Lions don't have any linebackers on their practice squad, so it will be interesting to see who they sign to take Ekejiuba's spot on the roster. Ekejiuba made the roster mainly for his special teams skills, so I suppose the Lions don't necessarily have to bring in another linebacker, especially since seven were on the roster to begin with.
While this injury won't really hurt the Lions at linebacker, it's a big blow to their special teams unit. He is a beast on the coverage teams, and they have had their fair share of struggles with him on the field. Hopefully other players will step it up now that Ekejiuba is out for the year.
