Lions traded 2014 5th-round pick to Jaguars for Mike Thomas

The Detroit Lions sent a fifth-round pick in 2014 to the Jacksonville Jaguars in exchange for wide receiver Mike Thomas, according to CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora. Earlier, what exactly the Lions parted ways with in the trade was unknown aside from it being a mid-round pick. Now we know that it was merely a fifth-rounder a couple years from now.

I suppose it shouldn't come as a huge surprise that the Lions gave up a 2014 pick instead of one from 2013. After all, during this year's draft they traded a 2013 fourth-round pick away in order to move up and select Tahir Whitehead. With the Lions already missing one mid-round pick, it makes sense for the pick in the Thomas trade to be from the 2014 draft.

Something worth remembering is that the Lions will likely receive a compensatory pick in 2013 since they lost cornerback Eric Wright in free agency. The Lions haven't had a compensatory pick earlier than the seventh round in a while, but it seems like a safe bet that they will receive one in 2013. This possibility could make it easier to part ways with a 2013 pick should the Lions complete any more deals before Thursday's deadline.
