Lions trade rumors: More deals on the way for Detroit?

The Detroit Lions have already completed one pre-trade deadline deal, and Jason La Canfora reports that more could be on the way.

The 2012 NFL trade deadline is still more than 24 hours away and already the Detroit Lions have completed one deal. On Tuesday, they acquired wide receiver Mike Thomas from the Jacksonville Jaguars in exchange for a 2014 fifth-round pick. The deal came out of left field a bit considering there had been so much talk about the Lions acquiring a defensive back rather than a wide receiver, but the Thomas trade may simply be the first of a few pre-deadline deals.

CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora was the one who reported on Tuesday that the Lions were "calling around to land a veteran safety" because they are concerned about the status of Louis Delmas. The Lions did not trade for a safety on Tuesday, but La Canfora reported after the Thomas deal happened that the Lions are "looking to make more moves" prior to Thursday's deadline.

Lions general manager Martin Mayhew has certainly shown little hesitation in pulling the trigger on deals right before the trade deadline. In 2008, shortly after he took over the general manager job, he dealt Roy Williams to the Dallas Cowboys for a few draft picks. Last year, he tried to acquire Ronnie Brown from the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for Jerome Harrison, but the discovery of a brain tumor during Harrison's physical voided the move. Most recently, Mayhew traded for Thomas on Tuesday.

What else could Mayhew have in store for us before the trade deadline? I have to think he makes some kind of move to land a safety. Not only is Delmas' health a concern, but Amari Spievey is still out after suffering yet another concussion. It's not clear when he will be back, so the Lions could certainly use a boost at that position. Ricardo Silva has played quite well since being signed from the practice squad, but it would be an understatement to say the Lions are lacking depth at safety.

It wouldn't shock me if the Lions traded for a cornerback given their injury issues there, but with Drayton Florence returning soon and Chris Greenwood potentially being activated from the PUP list, they may decide to roll with the guys already on the team. The same goes for the running back position. It'd be nice to acquire someone who is similar to Jahvid Best, but I think the Lions are in good shape depth-wise with Mikel Leshoure, Joique Bell and Kevin Smith.

What do you think Mayhew will do before Thursday's trade deadline?
