It's fitting that just days before Michigan plays Ohio State in football, the Detroit Lions have signed someone who played at both schools. The Lions announced on Tuesday that offensive guard Justin Boren, who started his career at Michigan and finished it at Ohio State, has been signed to the practice squad. Defensive tackle Jimmy Saddler-McQueen was released to make room for Boren.
I'm just going to be honest and say right now that I'm no fan of Boren. Not only did he transfer to Ohio State from Michigan, but the way he went about the move was pretty disgraceful. Typically once players get to the NFL I toss aside their college allegiances, but it's tough for me to look past what Boren did.
In any case, Boren was an undrafted free agent in 2011. He spent time on the Baltimore Ravens' practice squad that year and was with the team during the 2012 offseason. Before joining the Lions' practice squad, he had been a free agent since the start of the season.
Here's an updated look at the Lions' current practice squad:
RB Devin Moore
FB Shaun Chapas
WR Kris Durham
OG Rodney Austin
OG Justin Boren
DE Kendrick Adams
LB Carmen Messina
CB Conroy Black
Practice squad IR:
WR Patrick Edwards
CB Lionel Smith
