Lions notes: Jim Schwartz denies there is tension with Martin Mayhew

Lions notes looks at the Jim Schwartz/Martin Mayhew story, Sammie Hill going to IR and much more.

USA TODAY Sports
  • With defensive tackle Sammie Hill ruled out for Sunday's game, the Detroit Lions placed him on injured reserve on Saturday. Defensive tackle Jimmy Saddler-McQueen was signed from the practice squad to take Hill's spot on the roster.
  • On Friday, Jim Schwartz said the report about there being tension between him and Martin Mayhew "couldn't be farther from the truth."
  • Linebacker Stephen Tulloch thinks the off-field issues the Lions dealt with last offseason "wound up lingering into the season" and became a distraction. All I can say is that players better stay out of trouble this upcoming offseason.
  • Defensive end Cliff Avril, who is set to become a free agent, said this week that he "would definitely like to stay here." That has been the theme of his contract negotiations for some time now, but it doesn't really seem all that likely that he will remain with the Lions beyond the 2012 season.
  • Linebacker Justin Durant would also like to return to the Lions, but he admitted that he's prepared to look elsewhere if they don't plan on bringing him back.
  • LeBron James is a fan of Calvin Johnson.
