Last week when he met with the media, Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew declined to share many specifics about the team's draft plans. This was no surprise, of course. Mayhew likes to keep things close to the vest, although he did at least reveal an estimate of how many players are in consideration for the 23rd overall pick, pegging the number at between four and seven.
On what the ballpark number is of players that fit what they're looking for at 23: "There are probably between four and seven guys that we really feel very comfortable with that are great fits for us and that we're very excited about having."
Chances are not all of those players will end up being available to the Lions to pick. That's the point in considering several guys for the pick. The hope is that at least a few will be there to give the Lions some options. If not and something were to happen where all of them were gone, then perhaps you see a situation where the Lions opt to trade down.
Who do you think is being considered for the pick? If I had to guess, I'd say there are a few Alabama guys (Dre Kirkpatrick, Mark Barron and Courtney Upshaw), a couple defensive ends (Whitney Mercilus and Nick Perry) and probably a couple offensive linemen (perhaps Cordy Glenn and Jonathan Martin).
