Michael Cosgrove Scouting Report

DT Michael Cosgrove (Idaho) - Undrafted Free Agent

Idaho's Michael Cosgrove is one of two undrafted defensive linemen who signed with the Detroit Lions this offseason. The other, Edmon McClam, was scouted earlier this week, and now it's time to take a look at Cosgrove.

Experts' Opinions

SI.com:

Positives: Explosive interior lineman with adequate size and growth potential. Plays with good lean, uses his hands to protect himself and keeps his feet moving on contact. Flashes power in his lower body and the ability to push defenders off the line. Fights hard and plays until the whistle blows.

Negatives: Lacks great first-step quickness and speed in his game. Tends to get tall as the play proceeds and makes himself an easy target for opponents.

Stats

2008: 18 tackles, 1 sack

2009: 33 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 FF

2010: 29 tackles, 4 sacks

Outlook for 2012

At this point, it seems unlikely that there is enough room at defensive tackle for Cosgrove, even with Nick Fairley likely to be suspended. This is partly because it seems like the Lions will keep five defensive ends. Usually, they keep a total of nine defensive linemen, leaving only four spots for DTs. Even if they end up going with five DTs, the final spot will likely go to Andre Fluellen. Obviously, the possibility of Nick Fairley being suspended could shake things up early in the season, but Cosgrove is likely to land on the practice squad if he is kept around.
