A theme quickly emerged on the first day of Detroit Lions training camp: Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson are still really, really good. Stafford and Johnson combined to tear apart opposing defenses in 2011, and it sounds like they haven't missed a step in getting back into the swing of things after the offseason break. Johnson especially sounded like he had a dominant first day of practice, as evidenced by some of the tweets that were sent out during the session.
Calvin Johnson outran Delmas and Alphonso Smith, 69-yard TD in 7-on-7s.He's still good. In case you wondered— Chris McCosky (@cmccosky) July 27, 2012
Calvin Johnson (predictably) schooling DBs. Lacey, Green, Smith all fell victim to his skill. Nobody's stopped him yet— Lions RapidReports (@CBSSportsNFLDET) July 27, 2012
For his next trick, Calvin Johnson burns Chris Houston. No Lions DB has stopped him yet— Lions RapidReports (@CBSSportsNFLDET) July 27, 2012
Stafford also got quite a bit of praise during practice.
I don't think Matthew Stafford has thrown an incomplete pass all practice. He's working like a surgeon.— Tim Twentyman (@ttwentyman) July 27, 2012
Matthew Stafford picking up where he left off last season. Pinpoint control in drills. He and CJ appear to be of 1 mind— Lions RapidReports (@CBSSportsNFLDET) July 27, 2012
About to state the obvious. #Lions QB Matthew Stafford is so accurate and Calvin Johnson is ridiculous. Carry on.— Anwar Richardson (@AnwarRichardson) July 27, 2012
I like the sound of that.
