Running back Mikel Leshoure wasn't the only player who suffered an injury on the second day of Detroit Lions training camp. Offensive tackle Jeff Backus also got dinged up when he hurt his thumb. The injury happened during one-on-one drills and forced Backus to leave practice. He had X-rays done on the thumb, but the results of the tests aren't currently known.
"He hurt his thumb in one-on-one," Schwartz said. "Went in and got x-rays. Didn't return to practice. We're going to wait and see what those looks like. It wasn't real determinate right away, but there's some findings on there, so we'll look at it later this afternoon.
With Backus leaving practice, Corey Hilliard and Jason Fox shared the first-team reps at left tackle. Riley Reiff moved up to second-team left tackle before getting some work on the first string.
While it's entirely possible that Backus broke his thumb today, he might be able to continue practicing with a cast. It'll all depend on the severity of the injury, I suppose.
