The Detroit Lions have signed wide receiver Kassim Osgood, according to a tweet by him on Wednesday night.

This is a very interesting move by the Lions and speaks to their desire to get better on special teams. Osgood made the Pro Bowl in 2006, 2007 and 2010 for his play on special teams, and it's a good bet that the Lions decided to sign him for his special teams skills.
As a receiver, Osgood hasn't had more than six catches in a season since 2004. In his first two years in the league he had a total of 28 catches. Since then, Osgood has only caught 16 passes.
Osgood was with the San Diego Chargers from 2003-09. He spent the last two years with the Jacksonville Jaguars before being released in March. It remains to be seen if he will make the 53-man roster for the Lions considering he is joining the team so late in the preseason, but if he performs well on special teams, somebody like Maurice Stovall could be pushed off the team.
It's not known right now who has been released to make room for Osgood.
