Barring an injury, Jason Hanson will be entering the 2012 season as the Detroit Lions' starting kicker. Like every year in recent memory, the Lions brought in somebody to compete with Hanson during training camp, but he has once again emerged as the clear winner, as evidenced by the Lions cutting Derek Dimke on Monday morning.
Jason Hanson back for another season as Lions kicker. Lions release Derek Dimke today

Dimke was signed as an undrafted free agent out of Illinois. He wasn't expected to be anything other than a camp body to take some of the load off of Hanson. Although Dimke did make a field goal in Week 1 when Hanson missed an attempt, Hanson made it clear in the last two games that the Lions don't need to make any changes to who starts at this position. That is why Dimke has been let go.
