In Week 2 of the season, the Detroit Lions brought in several defensive backs for workouts. More than anything, the workouts were about getting a list together of players the team could sign should any injuries occur down the road.
This week, the Lions again brought in a few defensive backs, and they also brought in a few running backs. As we found out in advance of the Tuesday tryout session, the Lions invited Ryan Grant and Steve Slaton to their tryout, and Pro Football Talk reports that the two free agents did work out with the team this week. The Lions also worked out free-agent running back Alfonso Smith (not to be confused with former Lions cornerback Alphonso Smith), who had been with the Arizona Cardinals.
While Grant and Slaton are pretty notable names when it comes to which players worked out, neither was obviously signed following the tryout. Jason La Canfora reported earlier this week that the Lions don't plan to sign any of the running backs "at this point." Perhaps down the road if the Lions don't get Jahvid Best back they will opt to sign somebody like Slaton or Grant, but for now they are in a holding pattern.
The three defensive backs who worked out with the Lions this week, by the way, were Tyrone Culver, Jaiquawn Jarrett and Brandyn Thompson, according to Pro Football Talk.
