Lions sign TE Dorin Dickerson

The Detroit Lions have added a tight end.

Timothy T. Ludwig-US PRESSWIRE

With tight end Tony Scheffler dealing with a concussion, the Detroit Lions decided to add some extra depth to the position on Monday. They worked out three tight ends, according to Dave Birkett, and Dorin Dickerson just tweeted that he has signed with the team.

Dickerson is a former seventh-round pick out of Pittsburgh. He played for the Houston Texans in seven games in his rookie year. The next season, in 2011, he bounced around, spending time on the practice squads of the Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots. In 2012, he played in 11 games for the Buffalo Bills and recorded 9 catches for 117 yards.

Under Buffalo's new coaching staff this year, Dickerson spent time at both tight end and wide receiver. He was let go during the final round of cuts before the 2013 season, and he had been a free agent until joining the Lions on Monday.

At this time, there's no word on what the Lions are planning to do to create a roster spot for Dickerson. Somebody could be released, or the Lions could simply elect to put someone like Scheffler on injured reserve.
