Lions sign Patrick Edwards to practice squad

The Detroit Lions have decided to keep Patrick Edwards around as a member of the practice squad.

Wide receiver Patrick Edwards may no longer be on the Detroit Lions' 53-man roster, but he is still with the team. After clearing waivers on Tuesday, the Lions signed him to their practice squad and released fullback Shaun Chapas on Wednesday.

Edwards was released by the Lions on Monday when they needed a roster spot for new tight end Dorin Dickerson. In four games this season (that included two starts), Edwards only had 5 catches for 46 yards, so the move to release him made sense. It also made sense to keep him around on the practice squad since he's still eligible. He spent time on the practice squad (and practice squad injured reserve) last season, and the Lions can quickly re-sign him to the 53-man roster should they need help at wide receiver.

With Edwards in and Chapas out, the Lions' practice squad currently looks like this:

RB Steven Miller
WR Patrick Edwards
WR Corey Fuller
WR Jeremy Ross
OG Rodney Austin
DT Jimmy Saddler-McQueen
DT Xavier Proctor
LB Brandon Hepburn

Considering cornerback Chris Greenwood just became available after being released by the Dallas Cowboys, it would make a lot of sense if the Lions parted ways with Ross to make room for Greenwood's return.
