The Detroit Lions have released defensive tackle D'Anthony Smith. The move was announced on Wednesday evening, and it comes exactly a week after Smith was added to the Lions' roster after being claimed off waivers.
The Lions have not yet officially announced the signing of wide receiver Kevin Ogletree, but it's a safe bet that the move to release Smith is related to him. The Lions worked out Ogletree earlier on Wednesday, and they will need a roster spot to officially add him to the team.
As for Smith, he has now been let go by two teams in the last week or so. The Jacksonville Jaguars traded him to the Seattle Seahawks in August, and the Seahawks released him last week. He joined the Lions shortly after, but his stint with them lasted all of one week.
Why did the Lions let a defensive tackle go to make room for a wide receiver? They seem comfortable with Andre Fluellen serving as the fourth defensive tackle, and clearly they don't feel a need to have nine defensive linemen on their roster. Instead, they now have seven wide receivers with the addition of Ogletree.
