Lions to sign Jeremy Ross to practice squad

The Detroit Lions are reportedly making a change to their practice squad. According to Adam Caplan, wide receiver Jeremy Ross is set to join the practice squad after being released by the Green Bay Packers two weeks ago.

As of right now, as far as the public knows, there is not an opening on the Lions' practice squad. However, wide receiver Charles Hawkins just joined it a couple weeks ago, so perhaps the Lions have decided to let him go in order to make room for Ross. Wide receiver Corey Fuller is also on the practice squad, but he's a draft pick, so I can't imagine they've decided to release him.

In any case, Ross is headed to Detroit after spending time with the Packers over the last two seasons. He played in five games in 2012 and three games this year before being let go. He only had 1 catch for 8 yards in his time with Green Bay, but he returned 9 kicks and 6 punts. His averages were much better in 2012 (28.7 on kick returns and 25.8 on punt returns) than this year (12.5 on kick returns and 10.0 on punt returns). It's a small sample size, but he was released after a costly fumble on a kick return against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 3.

Perhaps the Lions see Ross as a potential addition to the 53-man roster should returner Micheal Spurlock suffer an injury. And at the very least, perhaps the Lions see an opportunity to get some information on the Packers from Ross, although it obviously would have made more sense to add him before Sunday's game in Green Bay.

UPDATE: The Lions did in fact release Hawkins.
